Indian Movie Dance Remixes

0

About

Indian Movie Dance Remixes are series of parody videos which dub pop music, mainly anime theme songs, over the dance scenes taken from Indian films. In the same manner as Tommy Seebach’s "Apache" on YouTube, the sharpness/grooviness of Indian movie dancing has been a popular visual resource for parody videos on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) since 2007.

Origin

Along with dawn of the online video-sharing era in mid-2000s, Indian films became to reach a wider audience via YouTube and other video hub sites. In particular, its characteristic dance scenes by a large number of actors have inspired viewers as well as its songs’ funny phonetic translations represented by “Benny Lava”.

Meanwhile on NND, users found a way to utilize those groovy Indian movie dances for audio-dubbing parodies. One of the earliest instances in this series is “Lucky MegaStar” which dubbed ”Motteke! Sailor Fuku”, an opening theme song from Japanese TV anime Lucky Star, over “Kodithe Kottali” from 2003 movie Tagore[1] starring Indian “Megastar” Chiranjeevi.[2] The original video was uploaded to YouTube on June 22nd, 2007[3], and soon reuploaded to NND in the following month.[4]

Spread

Audio-dubbing is one of the popular techniques in video parodies on that Japanese video sharing service. ”A Million Ways” by OK Go, “I Wanna Love You Tender” by Danny Ja Armi and Crazy Frog Brothers are famous visual resources for this kind of parody videos. And, Indian movie dances have much more popularity than all of them because it shows much more hilarious synchronization with Japanese anime/pop vocal songs written in high BPM. As well as “Kodithe Kottali”, “Shankar Dada M.B.B.S.” from Chiranjeevi’s 2004 flim Shankar Dada M.B.B.S.[5] and “Gola Gola” from 2006 Tegulu film Ashok[6] starring N. T. Rama Rao Jr. (Jr. NTR)[7] are also popular Indian dance video clips.

Left: “Shankar Dada M.B.B.S.”[8] | Right: “Gola Gola”[9]

On NND, dubbed videos utilizing these dances are usually tagged under wordplay phrases “Naan[10] to Curry[11] na Odori” (Japanese: ナンとカレーな踊り; lit. “What a wonderful dancing”) or “Naan ni demo Au” (ナンにでも合う; lit. “This goes well with everything”).[12]And not a few of them have been watched over millions times.

In the summer of 2014, a Telugu movie Baadshah[13] starring Jr. NTR was distributed to the Japanese theaters. In its promotion, the distributor highlighted the online popularity of his dance in parody videos, and described him as “Shingeki no Indo-jin” (進撃のインド人). It was inspired by that Attack on Titan / Shingeki no Kyojin Opening parody video which had earned over 1.5 million pageviews on YouTube until that summer.[14]

About

Free! Ending Dance Parodies (Japanese: Free!EDパロ) refers to a series of parody videos reproducing a dance in the ending credit movie for Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club, the 1st season of a Japanese TV anime series Free!. It was a popular subject for fan works among female fans on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) in 2013.

Origin

The TV anime series was produced by Kyoto Animation and aired 12 episodes between July and September 2013. Its ending theme “Splash Free!” was sung by Style Five, a group formed by the voice actors for main characters: Nobunaga Shimazaki[1], Tatsuhisa Suzuki[2], Tsubasa Yonaga[3], Daisuke Hirakawa[4], Mamoru Miyano[5]. And as same as their previous works, "Hare Hare Yukai" for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and "Motteke! Sailor Fuku" for Lucky Star, the studio inserts its favorite rendition, characters’ smooth dancing which begins from 0:18 in the footage.

Spread

Fans inspired by this dancing scene soon began creating their own version and post it to NND. Its amount had reached to 70 in the airing period, and increased to near 100 until the start of the 2nd season in July of the following year.[6] Many of them are reuploaded to YouTube as usual.[7]

Host Club Opening Parodies

About

Host Club Opening Parodies (Japanese: ホスト部パロ) refers to a series of parody videos of reproducing the opening credit movies of a Japanese TV anime Ouran High School Host Club by hand-drawn animation. In a reflection of its fanbase, it had been particularly practiced by female users on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) in 2007-2010.

Origin

The anime was produced by studio BONES and aired between April and September 2006. Its opening theme song “Sakura Kiss” was sung by a Japanese female singer/idol Chieko Kawabe.[1]

Spread

As a part of fandom for the manga/anime, hand-drawn animated videos reproducing the opening/ending credit movie by other anime/game characters began to be created by female fans after the Japanese video hub site was launched in the following year. According to the search results[2], users seemed to post videos actively from the middle of 2007 to 2008. And many of them are reuploaded to YouTube.[3]

However, the amount of videos in this series isn’t so large and it contains many unfinished versions which length is less than 10 seconds. This is because it’s one of the famous characteristics of female creations that users are allowed to give up finishing their works and post imperfect creations with a bunch of excuses.

About

Diggersby[1] (Japanese: ホルード ) is a Normal/Ground-type Pokémon that has the appearance of a large rabbit. Evolving from Bunnelby[2] at Level 20, this Pokémon is often scoffed at for being very ugly and useless.[3][4]

Origin

Diggersby was first introduced in Pokémon X and Y, which were released worldwide in 2013.[5] The phrase “Diggersby Tho” comes from a stream on YouTube by shofu[6], shown below.

The phrase is often considered to be a forced meme[4], due to the fact that it is often spammed on forums. As of August 28, 2014, Diggersby Tho has 3 separate Facebook communities, [7][8][9], and 1 Twitter account[10].
