About

MegasXLR is a cartoon created by Jody Schaeffer and George Krstic, which is about a futuristic robot called Megas (Mechanized Earth Guard Attack System), that was supposed to be used against the evil alien race known as the “Glorft”, but it got caught in a time warp along with futuristic pilot Kira and was sent hurdling back in time to New Jearsy, where a car mechanic by the name of Coop finds and modifies the vehicle to his own liking. Now Coop alonge side his best friend Jamie, and Kira must stop the alien race from destroying planet Earth, and find a way to send the robot back to the future and win the war against the Glorft onve and for all.

History

The show’s pilot episode “LowBrow” was shown in 2002 during Cartoon Network’s Cartoon Cartoon Weekend Summerfest. Due to it’s high ratings by the viewers the show was aired in Toonami on May 1st, 2005. The show lasted two seasons before being cancelled on January 15, 2005.

Reception

The show had done wonderfully during it’s time on the air. It was so popular that it had the number 4th spot on Toonzone’s “Toons of the 2000s: Top 5 Original Cartoons”, but sadly the show’s ratings had started to decline and was cancelled. It lasted for about a total of 26 episodes, but the show had left a remarkable effect on it’s fans and petitions are being signed to get the show back on the television screens.

Smug Anime Face is a term used for anime characters with a smug smile on their faces. They are often used as reaction images on manga and anime discussions.

Origin

The first known usage of the term “Smug Anime Face” was in response to a post on a “Greentext”: style story on 4chan’s /v/ Video Games board on August 3, 2012, featuring the character Yozora Mikazuki from the 2011 comedy anime series Haganai, or Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, chastising the author for his post.^[1] Later that same day, another user in turn criticised the response, primarily for it’s use of a generic GIF in response, featuring the term “smug anime face”.^[2]

Soon after the first thread, the term “smug anime face” began to appear over 4chan, as well as on other sites, with the first Smug Anime Face image thread being posted to 4chan’s /a/ Anime & Manga board on May 12, 2013^[3]. As well as this, there are also a Smug Anime Face Tumblr^[4] and Facebook page^[5], featuring images of characters from a variety of different anime series.

Fortune is a 4chan feature that generates random messages in the manner of fortune cookies’ predictions. Since its introduction on the /b/ (random) board, it became a subject of curiosity and intense spam on the site to the point that it has been made an exclusive addition to the /s4s/ (shit 4chan says) board.

Origin

According to “The Complete history of 4chan”, a collective effort in listing numerous events related to the imageboard, Christopher “Moot” Pool enabled the Fortune feature on April 27th 2007 by adding a name field on the otherwise anonymous /b/ board. Typing #fortune into it would trigger a random colored message resembling a fortune cookie’s prediction above the user’s own message. The list also states that one of the first threads involving people trying to guess their own fortune was stickied and became one of the most replied-to thread in the history of the board. There is sadly no available archive from that time. However, one of the earliest mentions of that new feature was found on a video by Youtuber iliekmudkip explaining how to use it on the site, posted July 10th 2007 (shown below).

On September 21th 2007, an anonymous poster on the /prog/ (programming) board ranted about the perceived overuse of the meme on the /b/ board^[2], revealing that the fortune feature may have been a reference to the four-leaf clover symbol of the site. Encyclopedia Dramatica gives details about a short-lasting sub-meme using the feature that began on October 3rd 2007 and consisted in users tricking the system into having a constant streak of the same “Godly Luck” message^[3]. The feature was eventually disabled following an event known as the “Great Caturday Nap” that occured on October 19th 2007, in which the 4chan website suffered DDoS attacks and was taken down by a group of people calling themselves Lulznet. The Encyclopedia Dramatica page for Fortune states that, following the incident, the feature was disabled and enabled several times, showing a screenshot of it being enabled again in 2008^[4].
On September 10th 2013, Fortune became the exclusive feature of the /s4s/ board, available nowhere else but there. A screenshot of the first post with it launched by Moot himself was taken at that time (shown below).

I Need A Monster To Clobber That There Kirby is a line associated with the character King Dedede from the English dub of the anime Hoshi no Kaabii, known in the English speaking world as Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, an adaptation of Nintendo’s Kirby franchise. The phrase has closely become associated with the character.

Origin

Hoshi no Kaabii first aired in Japan in 2001. It was licensed by 4kids Entertainment and first aired in America on September 1, 2002.^[1] In the version of the theme song used in the dub, the antagonist King Dedede has an encounter with the Nightmare Enterprises Salesman, from whom he gets his monsters from.

Since it was created, it has gathered approximately 622,000 tweets as of February 2015.^[1]

Background

On september 3th 2014, an anonymous 4chan user started the #notyourshield hashtag, responding to a call to organize.^[2]

About 15 minutes later, the hashtag was posted on twitter by @Ninouh90.^[3]

On September 4th, Quinn posted a tweet accusing #NotYourShield of beginning a “jamming hashtag” to “spread disinformation,” along with a screenshot from a 4chan post about the hashtag (shown below).

Bonus Ducks is a voice line by the non-playable character Merasmus from the first person shooter Team Fortress 2(TF2). In one of the minigames from the game’s 2014 Halloween update, the line would repeat various times without a cooldown in a similar fashion to Overtime,. The line is associated with the Duck Journal Event released in December 2014.^[3]

Origin

The Team Fortress 2 Annual Scream Fortress VI update was released on October 29, 2014, and featured a carnvial-inspired map where, every time a team won a round, a bumper car minigame was triggered with several variations.^[5] One of the variations, “Duck Collectors”, featured a large figure-8-shaped race track where the teams had to collect 200 golden rubber ducks in order to win. When a player dealt damage with the car by crashing into another player, “bonus” golden ducks would appear, along with the audio clip “Bonus Ducks!”, as spoken by the NPC Merasmus.^[2] The clip lacked a cooldown, however, meaning whenever a car collided with another car, the clip would play continuously. A cooldown was added on November 7, 2014.^[6]

On November 1, 2014, Youtuber Uncle Dane uploaded a video titled “Bonus Ducks Hitsound”, featuring the voice line as hitsound and givind a link to download the mod. On November 8, 2014, YouTuber Purple doom uploaded a video titled “CS:GO BONUSDUCKS!”, where the voice lineis mixed with kills from Counter Strike: Global Offensive. As of March 9, 2015, the video has over 7,000 views. On the Team Fortress 2 subreddit /r/tf2, the upvote arrow was replaced by a duck, and duck flairs were added in November, 2014.^[7]

End of the Line Update

On December 8, 2014, the End of the Line update was released, which featured the Duck Journal event, where whenever the player was killed, ducks were spawned and could be picked up.^[4] These ducks gave experience points, though being able to view one’s level was only available by buying a Duck Journal in the game shop. This was poorly received by the fans, who saw this as a Pay to Win event.^[8][9]

The next day, a Bonus Ducks game page was created, where one can click the ducks to hear the voice line.^[1] On December 12, 2014, YouTuber MrBreadedchicken uploaded a video titled “BONUS_DUCKS.exe.avi.mov.mp3”, in which he parodies the event by changing his name and avatar to Merasmus. As March 9, 2015, the video has over 48,000 views. On December 14, 2014, YouTuber Dapper Dog uploaded a video title “BONUSDUCKS!”, featuring a remix of the voice line. As March 9, 2015 the video has over 400,000 views.

Guy Fieri was born on January 22, 1968 in Columbus, Ohio.^[1] In 2006 he won first place on the cooking challenge show The Next Food Network Star, and in premiered his most well-known show, Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives, in 2007.

Internet Relevance

In 2011, CollegeHumor uploaded a the video “Guy Fieri at Hogwarts” to their YouTube channel, which parodied the typical style of a Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives episode by placing Fieri in the universe of the Harry Potter franchise. Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives is also a common source of footage for gag dub channel Jaboody Dubs; the most popular of these has gained over 1 million views since 2013.

In 2013, a website parodying Fieri was made at http://guysamericankitchenandbar.com/ after it was discovered that Fieri had failed to register the name.^[2] On March 9, 2014, Reddit user kdanson posted a picture of a fake television guide description for Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives to /r/funny, which gained over 5,000 upvotes on Imgur and over 3,500 upvotes on Reddit.^[3] Later in 2014, Reddit user snacks92 posted an image of a man imitating Fieri to /r/funny, which gained over 3,000 upvotes.^[4]

Guy Fieri also appeared as a cameo in the Internet Webcomic Homestuck in which he is featured as a homicidal tyrant installs a fascist goverment at the orders of an alien empress and murders a lot of humans in a genocide titled “hilarocaust” (as a reference to the holocaust)^[5] in a radical spinoff of his otherwise peaceful personality.

Fieri’s personal look, which includes spiked, bleached blond hair and oversized collar shirts, is also continuity parodied on the Internet.

Springtrap is a violent animatronic resembling a large anthropomorphic rabbit which is the main antagonist of the jump scare horror game Five Nights at Freddy’s 3.

Origin

On February 15th, 2015, YouTuber FusionZGamer uploaded a video about rumors that a new enemy in the upcoming game Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 would be named “Springtrap” (shown below, left). On March 1st, YouTuber TCTNGaming uploaded Garry’s Mod footage featuring a leaked 3D model of the Springtrap character (shown below, right).

On the following day, the third installment in the Five Nights at Freddy’s video game series was released, which takes place 30 years after the events of the original Five Nights at Freddy’s game at the horror-themed business “Fazbear’s Fright.” After the first night, a homicidal animatronic wearing a tattered rabbit suit named Springtrap is found, which the player must prevent from entering their security office to keep from being killed. During the course of the game, the player listens to cassette tapes and plays minigames providing information about the Springtrap suit’s history.

On March 2nd, 2015, a page for Springtrap was created on the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Wiki.^[1] On March 7th, YouTuber TCTNGaming uploaded a Garry’s Mod video titled “The Springtrap Titan,” including an enormous version of the Springtrap character model (shown below, left). The following day, YouTuber EnergeticShadow uploaded a Source Filmmaker video titled “The Misadventures of Springtrap – Episode 1,” featuring animations of Springtrap and other Five Night at Freddy’s characters (shown below, right).

“Nice Meme” is an ironic expression often used as a dismissive response to poorly received content posted in circle jerk communities online in a similar vein to the phrase “dank memes”.

Origin

The exact origin of the ironic usage of the phrase “nice meme” is unknown. On February 9th, 2013, the earliest archived instance on 4chan was posted to a thread in the /mu/ (music) board (shown below).^[2]

On December 24th, 2013, a 4chan user replied to a post featuring a poorly-drawn trollface with “nice meme” followed by the dorito face emoticon (shown below).

On February 4th, YouTuber Reddit Circlejerk uploaded a video titled “Nice Meme,” featuring an animated illustration of Barack Obama singing the phrase (shown below, left). On February 9th, Reddit Circlejerk uploaded footage of a Flappy Bird parody titled “Flappy Fedora,” which plays an audio clip of a man saying “nice meme” after successfully passing a flying fedora between cans of Mountain Dew (shown below, right).

On March 9th, the single serving website Niceme.me^[1] was launched, which displays the message “Nice meme!” accompanied by the same audio clip from the “Flappy Fedora” parody. On May 22nd, a Facebook^[6] page titled “Nice Memes” was launched. On August 7th, YouTuber Keith Smerbeck uploaded a video titled “real nice,” in which he plays the Niceme.me audio recording repeatedly while saying “nice meme” (shown below).

On September 17th, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott posted a photograph of himself posing with two young aboriginal children in Arnhem Land, Australia to his official Facebook^[3] page. That day, Redditor OrangeMemes_2 linked to the photo in a post titled “Everybody let Tony Abbott know how nice his meme is by commenting ‘nice meme’ on this post” to the /r/braveryjerk^[4] subreddit. The Facebook photo was subsequently flooded with users commenting “nice meme,” gathering upwards of 2,500 comments in the next six months. That day, BuzzFeed^[5] posted an article about the incident.

Foxy, or more specifically Foxy the Pirate Fox, is an animatronic mascot^[1] character resembling an anthropomorphic fox in a pirate costume and one of the four antagonists from the 2014 point-and-click horror game Five Nights at Freddy’s, who managed to gain a significant online following compared to the rest of the game’s cast. Foxy is unique to Five Nights at Freddy’s, as unlike the other animatronics he will hide for a while before coming to attack the player, making him a more surprising animatronic for first-time players.

Origin

The game Five Nights at Freddy’s was released on August 8, 2014 on Desura (and later on August 20, 2014 on steam after being greenlit)^[2] featuring 3 animatronics, named Freddy, Chica and Bonnie, along with a secret one named Foxy, due to the secret nature of Foxy, only appearing once certain events were triggered, it gained infamy amongst Lets Players of the game due to his surprising nature. Foxy the Pirate Fox, as the name suggests, is an animatronic Pirate Fox, with reddish-brown, ripped fur. He has a hook for his right hand, and an eye patch he can lift up. On the second release of the game, Foxy made another appearance in a more damaged version along with a pattern change, the game also features a genderbent and more damaged version of Foxy called Mangle (or Toy Foxy by some fans).^[3]

Foxy´s first online appearance was in Markiplier’s gameplay video of the game where he is shown (at minute 16:10) running through a hallway at the player (later on being his characteristic by fans) and promptly letting out a high-pitched scream at the player which triggered the game over screen.

After the release of the game, Foxy became one of the fandom’s favourite characters, which quickly resulted in fanworks being made of the character. A popular trope associated with Foxy is he “Bite of ’87” which is referenced in the game as an event that occurred in 1987, where Foxy malfunctioned, resulting in a child getting their frontal lobe bitten off. This accident resulted in Foxy being put “out of order” indefinitely.

On Aug 30, 2014, Youtube user Foxy The Pirate Fox uploaded a video of a comic featuring Foxy which gathered 1,768,012 views and 11,705 likes (Shown Below left), on November 29, 2014 user Vetario SFM uploaded a video featuring Foxy singing the song “You are a pirate”^[5] from the tv children show “Lazy Town” made in Source Film Maker(Shown Below right) which gathered 2,983,487 views and 17,055 likes.

On December 30, 2014 a remix of the song was uploaded by user NewBlu featuring a compilation of Foxy gifs and fanart, it gathered 529,534 views and 6,745 likes.(shown Below)

Related Memes

Fanart of Foxy was drawn, and many jokes have spawned from /vg/‘s 5N@F general thread, such as "I’m a good fox" spawning from a panel of a webcomic. This resulted in parodies of the webcomic.

Other fandom jokes around Foxy consist of the “knot”, a NSFW joke referencing an erect canine penis. The knot has also been referenced in fanart, and has become an in-joke.

In early to mid-October of 2009 a thread on 4chan’s /b/^[1] board was created in which users were asked to choose a song to sing via a GET game. The winning post ended up picking Bon Jovi’s^[2]Livin’ on a Prayer.^[3]

#FindDancingMan is a hashtag campaign launched by Twitter users in search of an overweight man who became a target of fat shaming after a photograph of him dancing at a music concert surfaced on 4chan in early March 2015. Within days of the campaign’s launch, the man was identified as a U.K. resident named Sean.

Background

On February 13th, 2015, a anonymous 4chan user posted two photographs of a man dancing at a concert with message “Spotted this specimen trying to dance the other week. He stopped when he saw us laughing” to the /pol/^[9] (politically incorrect) board (shown below). The comment subsequently received several replies criticizing the poster for being mean-spirited.

On March 4th, Imgur^[1] user FrozenBadger uploaded a screenshot of the post titled “Why I Hate Children,” which criticized the original poster for being cruel and immature. The following day, Twitter user @FitchyEmma^[16] posted the screenshot asking for followers to find the man and “tell him that he is beautiful and we love him” (shown below).

A Dance Party for the #DancingMan

Also on March 5th, Twitter user Cassandra Fairbanks^[2] tweeted the screenshot, asking for viewers to identify the man to “do something special” for him (shown below, left). Within one week, the tweet gained over 4,300 favorites and 3,800 retweets. On March 6th, the @TheElleWord^[3] Twitter feed posted a call to action to find the man pictured in the photos in order to throw a dance party with the hashtag #FindDancingMan^[15] (shown below, right).

Identity

Also on March 6th, Fairbanks^[4] tweeted a photograph of the dancing man holding a sign greeting Cassandra and his supporters on Twitter, and identified him as the creator of the @Dancingmanfound^[8] Twitter feed (shown below). In four days, the @Dancingmanfound Twitter feed received upwards of 78,000 followers. According to The Daily Mail,^[14] it was revealed that the man was named Sean and resided in London, England.

Celebrity Tweets

Also on March 6th, musicians Pharrell Williams,^[5] Moby^[6] and Andrew W.K.^[7] tweeted their support for Sean and expressed interest in performing at his upcoming dance party (shown below).

T-Rex’s Short Arms, also known as Sad T-Rex, is a running joke often featured in webcomics and illustrations which pokes fun at the tyrannosaurus rex’s disproportionately short arms in relation to the size of its body. The most common instances of the joke portray the dinosaur as a sad creature who is unable to carry out simple manual tasks, such as masturbating or applauding, due to its physical shortcomings.

Origin

The first known online instance of the joke can be found in a YouTube clip of a scene from the 2007 Disney CGI animated film Meet The Robinsons, uploaded by YouTuber tallworm on April 7th, 2007. In the clip, the character Tiny the Dinosaur (voiced by Joe Mateo) chases Lewis Robinson into a corner, but ultimately fails to restrain him because of his small arms. Tiny then says “I have a big head, and tiny arms. I’m just not sure how well this plan was thought through."^[1]

Precursor

The history of the joke precedes its usage in webcomics by decades, with its earliest known appearance in print found in an illustration from Gary Larson’s single-panel comic series The Far Side, published circa the mid-1980s. The comic features a family of Tyrannosaurs at a dinner table where the parents are in mid-argument over the father’s inability to pass the mashed potatoes due to the length of his forearms.

In 2009, a comic called “Sad T-Rex” by Christian Blethen, was posted to /r/funny and received 148 votes (84% upvoted).^[2]

In 2011, the comic was reposted first by Fuck_You_Im_Scottish, then by user wrong_game, netting 366 points (88% upvoted)^[3] and 581 points (86% upvoted)^[4] respectively.

As the comic gained in popularity, people expanded the joke. On January 22, 2012, the Tumblr “T-Rex Trying” was founded by Hugh Murphy, devoted to comic sketches of a T-Rex attempting different tasks. Of the five images he posted that day, the two most popular received 31,182 notes^[5] and 13,201 notes^[6]. Murphy published a book of his drawings on October 7, 2014 ^[7].

Since the popularity of these two examples, many other examples have been created by other webcomic authors, and many of these have been collected on Reddit or Tumblr.

In 2014, the browser Chrome Canary featured a T-Rex with Short Arms on the “Can’t Connect to the Internet” page. While waiting for their connections to resume, users could click the dinosaur and play a running game offline ^[8].

The scene originates from an episode of the British children’s cartoon, ‘Peppa Pig’. In the episode, Peppa is trying to learn to whistle, so she calls her friend. It turns out that her friend knows how to whistle. Peppa silently hangs up on her.

When origin is unknown, first instance of ASCII established on websites like Steam, YouTube and Vimeo on late 2013.^[1][2][3]

The original creation is set out of six Unicode symbols including: Light Shade “░” – 0×2591, Left Half Block “▌” – 0×258C, Right Half Block “▐” – 0×2590, Full Block “█” – 0×2588, Upper Half Block “▀” – 0×2580 and Lower Half Block “▄” – 0×2584.

On December 24, 2013, spooky skilenton group was united on Steam.^[4] On October 11, 2014, Dr.Cokesniff has written it under the definition of 2spooky4me on Urban Dictionary.^[5] A trollpasta SKELETONSWILLEATYOU was submitted to Trollpasta wiki.^[6] On October 28, 2014, spooky skeleton was posted on Reddit to r/ledootgeneration/. It gained 46 points (92% upvoted).^[7] Two days after, the same ASCII could have been found on r/copypasta/ subreddit with 32 points (87% upvoted).^[8]

Hyperdimension Neptunia is a series of JRPGs based on the Console Wars. Featuring Moe Anthopomorphisms of various consoles, handhelds, game development companies and aspects of piracy and gamer culture

Origin

In 2006, a company called Idea Factory collaborated with Compile Heart, a subsidiary, to release a Game called “Hyperdimension Neptunia” on the Playstation 3 Console. The plot involves Neptune (based on an unreleased SEGA product codenamed “Neptune”) a CPU (Console Patron Unit, one of 4 goddesses in the game’s setting) who lost her memories following a defeat that ousted her from Celestia from the other CPUs and sent her falling to the landmass below, called “Gamindustri”. There she meets Compa and IF (Representing the primary developers and trio go on an adventure to restore Neptune’s memories, meeting the other 3 CPUs, Noire, Vert and Blanc (Based on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, respectively) as well as Arfoire (based on the R4 card for the Nintendo 3DS or the Majikon with her original Japanese name) , the game’s villain, Histoire, a powerful tome-fairy and ally to the goddesses, and other characters representing other game companies. The game was published by SEGA in Japan and Nippon Ichi Software in Western territories.

The plot, which included several jokes and references to video games, and the appeal of the characters contributed to the game’s success, and in turn warranted a sequel.

History

Since the release of the first game, there had been 2 subsequent games with a fourth game coming out. The first of which, Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 introduced 4 new characters Nepgear, Uni, Rom and Ram, the sisters of 3 of the CPUs and based on the SEGA Game-Gear, Playstation Portable and Nintendo DS, respectively. as well as new supporting characters and villains. This game focuses more on software piracy, and has Arfoire’s impact on the story increased as a result.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory returns to the Console Wars theme of the first game, but based around the 16-bit era. Several years after the end of the second game, Neptune is thrust into a parallel dimension that features a version of Gamindustri set in 1989. This game Introduces 2 new playable CPUs, Plutia (based on the Sega Genesis) and another one based on the Turbo-Grafix16, known as the PC Engine in Japan as well as having a third CPU as the primary antagonist, and based on the Atari 2600 (yes the 2600 of bad Pacman, ET, and Great Crash fame)

Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory II is an upcoming installment to come out in Japan in April 23^[1]. It features an Older Human counterpart of Neptune and a CPU based on the SEGA Dreamcast. as well a new transformations for the goddesses. The game will take place throughout three different and completely new dimensions.

There are also several spin-offs games, including a Senran-Kagura like Beat-em-up, an Idol Sim game, mobile spinoffs, a Strategy RPG focusing on Noire, and remakes of the 3 currently released core games for the Playstation Vita (with the first one ported to Steam and the next installment on the way^[2]) These games take place in alternate universes that are more or less the same as the originals, but exist seperately to account for the abundance of new characters added ever since the first game came out. There are also several manga adaptations of the games.

Anime

An anime adaptation was produced by David Entertainment in 2013. It’s plot and continuity are separate from those of the game, but elements of the 3 games released at the time of its airing are in the anime. It will be dubbed by Funimation^[6]

On Reddit there is a subreddit dedicated to the franchise, called r/gamindustri, which started in 2013. On Sunday November 10th of 2013, redditor Rubydragon79 posted a thread about Noire to the r/awwnime subreddit. The thread’s subject references a voting contest held from September 1st to 29th of 2011 to determine who will be the protagonist of a spinoff^[13] (which Noire would eventually win, the spin-off being called “Planet Destroyer Black Heart” in Japan and “Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart” in the west^[14]), the post obtained 185 upvotes. Another voting contest was held recently from November 6th, 2014 to December 4th, 2014 on Compile Heart’s website that once again asked fans to vote for their favorite character, who would be cast as the next lead in another spinoff game^[15]. This time around, Blanc took 1st place, which means we’ll be getting a title sometime in the future that centers around her^[16].

Over at 4chan, a thread was posted at Nov. 21, 2013, declaring itself to be the 290th general thread about the games ^[7], as well as a total 12777 archived threads as of this writing ^[8].

There is also a dedicated forum^[3], 2 wikis ^[4][5] a TV Tropes entry^[9] a total of 10 pages worth of pixiv entries^[10] around 9000 entries on DeviantART^[11].

Fandom

The first game’s story and characters built up a dedicated fanbase. Some of which created mods for Left 4 Dead 2. others created a series of fan-animations of Game Grumps Featuring the characters of the series of video games.

On May 25th, 1983, the film Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi was released. in which a strike team led by the character Han Solo manages to sneak past Empire’s security under the guise of being an engineering crew. After Solo’s shuttle communicates with an Empire official, Admiral Piett, on the way to the planet Endor, the antagonist Darth Vader asks if they provided a “code clearance,” to which Piett replies “it’s an older code, but it checks out” (shown below).

On July 17th, 2012, Redditor iwan_w replied to a joke referencing the “I Herd U Like Mudkips” meme with the phrase “It’s an older meme, sir, but it checks out” (shown below).^[1]

On July 28th, 2013, Imgur^[2] user Valkor submitted a screen capture from the Star Wars scene with the caption “It’s an older meme, sir / but it checks out” (shown below).

On June 26th, 2014, George Takei tweeted^[4] a Star Trek-themed image macro with the description “It’s an older meme, but it checks out” (shown below). Within nine months, the tweet accumulated more than 1,300 favorites and 760 retweets.

On September 13th, Redditor pdmcmahon submitted an animated GIF of the Star Wars scene captioned with a parody dialogue between Vader and the Empire official to the /r/gifs^[3] subreddit (shown below). Within five months, the post gathered upwards of 4,100 votes (94% upvoted) and 300 comments.
