This is Now a Spiderman Thread refers to a method of threadjacking or shitposting by posting an image macro with the caption that declares the derailment from the original post or to start a new thread based on the specific subject. While the practice was originally focused on posting 60’s Spider-Man images, it later covered other subjects, spawning the snowclone“This is now a X thread”.

Origin

One of the earliest examples of the practice was in April 29th, 2010, on 4Chan’s /a/ board, where several users attempted to derail a thread by posting screenshots from the Retro Spider-Man series^[1]. The term “This is Now a Spiderman Thread” was coined on an attempted thread derailment in July 30th, 2010, on 4Chan’s /tv/ board^[2].

On December 8th, 2010, a different variation of the practice spawn 4Chan’s /a/ board where a user attempted to derail a discussion into a My Little Pony Thread.^[3]

On February 25th, 2011, Funnyjunk user andrewandreas posted an screenshot image of a Spider-Man comment chain that occured at the site on February 21st, 2011. Within 4 years, the post has gathered more than 85.000 views with 1.331 upvotes.^[4] On December 29th, 2012, Imgur user vojnik uploaded a 60’s Spider-Man image which uses the term “This is Now A Spiderman Thread” as the title. Within 2 years, the post has gathered more than 12.900 views with 102 points.^[5]

On January 23rd, 2013, Youtube user Special People TV uploaded a video titled “Spiderman Thread Song (SPTV)” in which the user sings using lines from various 60’s Spider-Man image macros. Within 2 years, the video has gathered more than 12.000 views (shown below). On May 28th, 2013, Urban Dictionary user AntonioCastagnoli submitted an entry regarding Spiderman Threads.^[6]

The practice of using the term can be found in various sites such as Comic Vine^[7], IGN^[8], Empires^[9], Car Forums^[10], and PlayDota^[11].

“I Bet The Jews Did This” is an exclamatory phrase, used in event of some kind of misfortune, to put blame on the people of Jewish origin. The phrase is often used in reaction images.

Origin

The original image macro (pictured below) was based off a stock image of an angry looking man holding tangled christmas lights^[4]. On May 28th, 2009, after taking a caption at the bottom “I BETTHEJEWSDIDTHIS”, the image was posted on 4chan’s /b/ (random) board^[1].

Spread

On October 5th, 2012, a Reddit user banned_from_all_subs uploaded a gif (pictured below, left) of soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo made to look like he’s saying “THEJEWSDIDTHIS”^[2]. As of May 2015, the post had 829 upvotes. On March 27th, 2013, another gif in a similar vein, featuring Cristiano Ronaldo with a caption “COME ON, JEWS!”, was posted on Imgur^[3].

On April 9th, 2013, redditor Wizuhd submitted on /r/thankspatriarchy an edited version of the original picture featuring Anita Sarkeesian’s face over the original and the caption “I bet the patriarchy did this!”.^[5] In two years, the post received over 100 upvotes.

Dindu Nuffin is a pejorative term that originated on /pol/ to mock and criticize black people during the numerous riots throughout 2014 and 2015.

Origin

The phrase “dindu nuffin” is derived from a bastardization of the phrase “didn’t do nothing”, a plea for innocence often used in reference to unarmed black men killed by police. One of the most famous instances of the usage of this phrase can be found in a comic. Detractors often use “dindu nuffins” to refer to sympathizers of the black community.

The phrase originated on /pol/ around August 2014^[1], during the riots in Ferguson, Missouri started as a response to the shooting of Michael Brown.

The term started being used as synonim of anime and as a way to troll anime fans and japanophiles on 4chan,^[3] extending to other communities like Tumblr.^[5] On May 10th, 2012, user icantfeelmyarms submitted an entry for “chinese cartoon”, defining it as “what normal people call anime.”^[7] On July 30th, 2013, a subreddit named Chinese Cartoons was created, although it only has 18 suscribers.^[6] On November 29th, 2013, user Lanik submitted a thread on MyAnimeList forums asking why people calls anime “chinese cartoons”, getting as replies that is a joke.^[1]

Hoo Hah is the name given to an infamous combo used by the character Diddy Kong in the fighting game Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U. The combo was well known in the Smash community for its ease of use and extreme effectiveness.

Origin

The term hoo hah comes from the noises made by Diddy Kong, a monkey, as he performs the combo, which consisted of a doawnward throw and an upward aerial attack.^[1] The term did not come to true popularity until January of 2015, when the Smash Bros.-centered YouTube channel GRsmash uploaded a video of the professional Smash player Hungrybox quitting in the middle of a professional fight where, after repeatedly falling for the combo, would get heckled by Smash player StaticManny, who shouted the term from the audience. This video gained over 250,000 views.

As Hungrybox’s sudden quit rose in popularity, so did the combo. The video was posted to the subreddit /r/smashbros on January 18, where it gained over 600 upvotes and over 600 comments.^[2] On January 25, professional Smash player Omni uploaded a video explaining the technique’s origin and the community’s reaction, which gained over 50,000 views. On March 8, YouTuber AlpharadTV uploaded a compilation of Hoo Hah combos featuring an edited version of the theme song to the Donkey Kong Country animated series, which gained over 66,000 views. The term appears more than 450 times on SmashBoards, the largest Smash Bros. discussion forum, though this number may be too low an estimation as the board’s search function cuts off results at April 2015, months after the term first rose in popularity.^[3]

In April 2015, both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4 were patched to accommodate for several new features, such as the character Mewtwo; alongside this, most characters received changes to balance the game out.^[4] Diddy suffered heavily from these changes, with the Hoo Hah being noticeably nerfed. Fans noted this with jokes about the “death” of the Hoo Hah.

Clinton Cash is a 2015 book written by American political journalist Peter Schweizer in which he raises several ethical questions concerning how Bill and Hillary Clinton amassed their wealth by investigating the history of donations made by various foreign entities to the Clinton Foundation, a non-profit humanitarian organization established by former United States president Bill Clinton in 2001.

Background

Prior to the release of his book, Peter Schweizer, the American political commentator and president of the conservative investigative research organization Government Accountability Institute (GAI), made exclusive agreements with The New York Times, The Washington Post and Fox News for syndication of his work. Upon its publication on May 5th, 2015, the book stirred up a debate in the U.S. news media over the ethical integrity of the Clintons, particularly in regard to foreign donations received by the Clinton Foundation, such as compensation for speeches delivered by Bill Clinton and possible conflicts of interest as a result thereof while Hillary Clinton served as Secretary of State for the United States from 2009 to 2013.

On April 22nd, the news site Politico^[11] published a review of an advanced chapter of the book, which criticized Schweizer for failing to present adequate evidence for his claims. The same day, the news site Time^[12] faulted the book for presenting allegations “as questions rather than proof.” On April 28th, BuzzFeed News^[10] published a statement from Clinton spokesman Matt McKenna, who dismissed Schweizer’s allegations that Bill Clinton was paid for speeches in Ireland by businessman Dennis O’Brien as false.

Clinton’s Response

In response to the book, the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign issued a sweeping dismissal Schweizer’s claims. On April 20th, Clinton made her first public statement regarding the controversy:

“We are back into the political season and there are all kinds of distractions and attacks, and I am ready for that. I know that that comes, unfortunately, with the territory. It is, I think, worth nothing that the Republicans seem to be talking only about me. I don’t know what they would be talk about if I wasn’t in the race. But I am in the race and hopefully we will get onto the issues and I look forward to that.”

On May 5th, the Clinton campaign launched a webpage titled “The Briefing”^[9] to refute claims made in the Clinton Cash book. The page features a video presented by Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon, who insists that Schweizer’s allegations had been “debunked far and wide” (shown below).

Bearded Hipster Cop, not to be confused with the nearly identical moniker given to the New York Police Department Detective Rick Lee, is the nickname given to Peter Swinger, a Metropolitan Police Service officer and former militaryman who was photographed while on crowd control duty during a rally held by Britain’s far-right, anti-Muslim group English Defense League (EDL) in east London on May 9th, 2015. In the following days, Swinger quickly became internet famous for his well groomed facial hair that is stereotypically associated with hipster aesthetics.

Origin

On May 9th, 2015, British photojournalist Guy Smallman attended a highly controversial parade led by the country’s far-right, Islamophobic political group English Defense League (EDL) to cover the event, during which he took a photograph of a Metropolitan Police Service officer with strikingly well-groomed facial hair. Smallman subsequently uploaded the photograph online via his Twitter account^[1] using the hashtag #HipsterCop. Within the first 48 hours, Smallman’s photograph garnered more than 160 retweets and over 100 favorites.

“I Am Growing Stronger” is a memorable statement from the American doctor Kent Brantly, who contracted Ebola during his stay on Africa. Although the quote was refering to his recovery from the virus and the effectiveness of the medicine, on some online communities it was interpreted as he was gaining powers from the infection, inspiring a series of edits where Brantly was given glowing eyes.

Origin

On August 8th, 2014, Kent Brantly released his first public statement since contracting Ebola stating that he was “growing stronger every day.” Various news outlets wrote about this statement, such as Time,^[1] The Guardian,^[2] Fox News^[3] and Mashable.^[4]

On August 13th, a thread^[5] was made on 4chan’s /pol/ board where Brantly’s statement was jokingly received to define that he was gaining superhuman abilities from Ebola. Following this, various images were posted in that thread where pictures of Brantly were photoshopped to give him glowing eyes and other signs of superhman powers. The thread was subsequently screencaptured (shown below) and posted on the r/4chan sub-Reddit^[6] where it received over 4,000 upvotes in a few days.

Origin

The reaction image originated from a Digital Spy video interview of the Avengers: Age of Ultron actors Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Chris Evans (Captain America), released on April 22nd, 2015^[1]. At the beginning of the video, the interviewer asked the question about shipping within the fandom, that the character Black Widow (portrayed by Scarlett Johansson) was shipped with both Hawkeye and Captain America but got together with Bruce Banner/The Hulk (portrayed by Mark Ruffalo). Jeremy to which replied “She’s a slut.” and Chris burst into laughter.

Kawaii (カワイイ) is a Japanese term meant to denote cuteness upon a person or object. Typically the phrase is used by anime fans and japanophiles on western websites.

History

As a word kawaii stemmed from the phrase “kawahayushi” (顔映し) which literally means “radiant faced” and is ore commonly used to refer to someone who is blushing. Over time the pronunciation changed, and the meaning came to mean someone who has a cute or adorable appearance.^[1]

The earliest Urban Dictionary entry for the phrase was posted on June 4, 2003.^[2] On January 24, 2006, YouTuber Alcaka uploaded a chibi style video entitled The Omega Kawaii Cloud Song dedicated to Final Fantasy character Cloud (shown below left). On October 26, 2006, YouTuber InuKenYu uploaded a compilation of several different yaoi relationships from several different anime series, entitled “Kawaii Yaoi” (shown below right).

Nineteen Eighty-Four, sometimes called 1984, is a science-fiction novel written by George Orwell in 1949. As a detailed description of a speculative dystopian government, it has become one of the most influental books in the last few decades, spawning several memes in- and outside the internet.

Premise

Nineteen Eighty-Four takes place in the totalitarian superstate of Oceania, ruled by political party called Ingsoc, which is divided into three three social classes: Proles, the manual labor, Outer Party, which handles the menial political work, and Inner Party, the ruling class. The leader of Inner Party is Big Brother, who enjoys an intense cult of personality. Both Outer Party and Proles live in perpetual poverty and misery, but Outer party is far more closely supervised via telescreens and thought police, while being constantly bombed with state propaganda. The Party members’ capasity for independent thinking is limited even more by doublethink, which forces them to genuinely believe the Party’s propaganda, and newspeak, a simplified version of English language which limits their intellectual capacity.

The main character of the novel is Winston Smith, an Outer Party member who works in the Ministry of Truth, which constantly forges history to fit Party’s current interests. Winston Eventually get’s in Party-forbidden relationship with another Outer Party member named Julia, and comes into contact with O’Brien, an Inner Party member who’s secretly against Big Brother’s dictatorship.

On October 30, 2013, music news magazine Greenroom Magazine published an interview with Fantano on their website, which included a photograph of Fantano doing a rap squat in their eponymous green room.^[1]

Origin

The comic originally comes from the comic Gunshow^[1], which has created a group of other memes including Staredad, Dickbutt, Mother of God and I’m Okay With This. The comic which depicts a dog who’s house is burning to the ground, however the dog reacts calmly, as he is slowly shown burning to death.

The comic’s first two panels have gained much popularity on sites such as imgur and Tumblr for being an accurate and useful description of stressful situations.

Ageless Ash, also known as Immortal Ash, refers to a joke among fans of the pokemon animated series that the main protagonist, Ash Ketchum, doesn’t seem to age at all.

Origin

On April 1st, 1997, the Pokemon animated series began airing in the japanese network TV Tokyo. The story follows Ash Ketchum, a 10 year old boy who goes out on an adventure to realize his dream of becoming a pokemon master. While the series has aired for more than 18 years with 19 seasons, most of the characters including Ash do not age at all which follows the Not Allowed to Grow Up trope^[1].

Discussions regarding Ash’s age and the timeline of the series can be found in sites such as PokeCommunity^[2], Tv.com^[5], PokeMasters^[6], Yahoo! Answers^[4], and DS Database^[3]. The issue regarding Ash’s age has become one of the main inspirations for the Ash’s Coma Creepypasta^[7].
On an unregistered date, 9gag user LLOYDBLAZE uploaded an image which compares Avril Lavigne’s seemingly youthful face throughout the years with Ash Ketchum (Shown below left). As of May, 2015, the image has gathered 16.750 points^[8]. On 28th June, 2012, Funnyjunk user sexwithyourwife uploaded an image which places Ash Ketchum with other known cartoon figures who have never age throughout the years (Shown below right). Within 2 years, the image has gathered more than 47.800 views and 2.390 upvotes^[9].

On September 12th, 2013, famous Youtube user TheJWittz uploaded a video titled “Ash Ketchum’s Age – Pokémon Fact of The Day” where he discusses about Ash’s age, the facts, and the fan theories that surrounds it. Within a year, the video has gathered more than 2.6 million views. The video was subsequently reposted on Kotaku the very next day^[10].

On June 1st, 2014,an entry regarding the fan theories surrounding Ash’s age was submitted to FanTehories Wiki^[12]. On June 9th, 2014, Deviantart user Garbanosian uploaded a webcomic which features Ash with an aged Misty and Brock. As of May, 2015, the webcomic has gathered more than 82.000 views and 2.212 favorites^[11].
