Bunny Suits

About

Bunny Suits are a sexualized form of rabbit costume, typically associated with the Playboy Club, compromised of a corseted teddy, bunny ears and tail, a collar, cuffs, black pantyhose, and high-heeled shoes. In Japan, the costume has become a popular example of a sexy costume, both in real life and with fan artists.

Origin

The Bunny Suit was originally developed for the Playboy Club, a chain of nightclubs run by Playboy Enterprises, where the cocktail waitresses on staff would wear the costume.[1] The costume, inspired by Playboy’s bunny logo, was designed by Zelda Wynn Valdes, and was first unveiled on the television show Playboy’s Penthouse in 1959. It was implemented into the clubs soon after in 1960.

In the West, the costume, though iconic, is not as popular as it is in Japan, due to copyrights on the form of the costume in the United States. In Japan, the costume has much wider spread as the copyright is not enforced, and is a common cosplay; as such, it is portrayed in many popular Japanese media such as anime and manga. A girl wearing the costume is usually referred to as a bunnygirl (バニーガール, banīgāru).

Spread

A TV Tropes article on the costume describes the uses of the costume in popular culture.[2] Both pixiv and danbooru have over 10 thousand images tagged as having the suit.[3][4] It is a common practice for fan artists to draw female fictional characters in the outfit, even if they never appeared as such in their original media. Common characters to portray in the costume include Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimiya and Kallen Kōzuki from Code Geass, as both had popular and official portrayals in their original series.

Panelaço / 2015 Protests in Brazil

$

Overview

The 2015 Protests in Brazil are a series of mass demonstrations against the government of the re-elected president Dilma Roussef (Worker’s Party, PT).[1] The protests erupted after a economic crisis hit the country and the popular discontent against corruption came to a unbearable level. The majority of the protesters demand the impeachment of Rousseff.

Background

The left-wing Worker’s Party (PT) is the ruling party in Brazil since the 2002 general elections. In that occasion, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated the center-left candidate José Serra.[2] In 2005, a mass corruption scandal dubbed mensalão erupted. The scheme consisted in the misuse of public funds to buy the support of the parliament. Massive payments were given to deputies and senators from the allied base in exchange of support to Lula’s government.[3] Despite the scandal, Lula still managed to win the 2006 presidential run, defeating the opposing candidate Geraldo Alckimin[4] and to elect his successor, former Chief of Staff of the Presidency and Minister of Mines and Energy Dilma Rousseff, in 2010.[5] Her first mandate witnessed a series of mass protests in 2013, that were not, however, directed against her. In 2014, an even bigger corruption scandal came to the surface, this time involving the state-owned oil extraction company Petrobras.[6] Dubbed Petrolão (big oil), the scheme involved the moving of billions of dollars from the company to political parties from the allied base, including Rousseff’s and Lula’s Worker’s Party.[7] Despite everything, Roussef still managed to win a second term in the 2014 elections, defeating Aécio Neves.[8] In less than a month after the elections, right-wing protestors started demonstrations against her, calling for the start of an Impeachment procedure. Allegations of electoral fraud were not unheard.[9] Roussef’s second term started in 2015, and her popularity dropped massively thanks to the economic recession and developments in the investigations of the Petrobras corruption scandal.[10] A nationwide series of mass protests was scheduled by right-wing internet groups for March 15, 2015.

Notable Developments

The first “Panelaço”

On March 8, 20:00 pm, the Brazilian TV channels aired a presidential speech celebrating the International Women’s Day. In the speech, Rousseff tried to calm down the population by saying that the crisis was temporary. The 16-minute speech did not ended up well for Rousseff, since the population reacted with a massive and loud protest: after a call from the social networks, thousands of people, from their homes, banged cooking pots, blew horns, flickered the lights and shouted insults against the president and the ruling party.[11] The new form of protest was dubbed Panelaço, and occurred in all major cities of Brazil.[12] In that occasion, John Oliver from Last Week Tonight mocked Roussef and sympathized with the protesters:

March 15 protests and two more “Panelaços”

Days after the first “Panelaço” a giant street protest against Rousseff’s government took place in every major city of the country.[13] The demonstrations were scheduled by internet right-wing groups like Revoltados ON LINE (On-line Revolted), Vem Pra Rua (Come to the streets) and Movimento Brasil Livre (Free Brazil Movement). People were dressed in the national team uniform and in national colors, carried flags of Brazil, horns and posters, and shouted “Out, Dilma!”[13] According to the Military Police, around 2.4 million people attended to the marches, one million people only in São Paulo.[14] The protests were the biggest in the democratic history of Brazil.[15] The demonstrations ended with the organizers scheduling a new street protest for April 12. Later in the day, an address by two of Rousseff’s ministers the promised anti-corruption measures was aired nationwide, and sparked another Panelaço.[13] On March 16, the third Panelaço took place when a recording of Roussef’s speech about the protests was aired during the main television news show.[16]

April 12 Protests

Less than a month after the March 15 protests, hundreds of thousands Brazilians returned to the streets in April 12.[17] This time, according to the Military Police, over 700,000 people attended in the nationwide protests.[18] The protestors mainly called for the Impeachment of Rousseff.[19] A survey from the same month showed that 63 percent of the population supported the start of impeachment procedures against the president, and only 13 percent approved her.[17]

The fourth “Panelaço”

A national program of Rousseff’s Worker’s Party was scheduled to be aired on May 5, at around 20:30 pm. Early in the day, the same internet right-wing groups called for another Panelaço against it.[20] Even though Rousseff did not appear on the recording, the appearances of former president Lula and the party’s leader Rui Falcão, as well as the general distrust in the party, sparked a new Panelaço in 22 states of the country.[21]

The March for Freedom

After announcing it in April 12, members of the libertarian group Movimento Brasil Livre (Free Brazil Movement) departed from São Paulo on April 24 to a 600 miles walking march to Brazil’s capital Brasilia. The journey was named “March for Freedom” by the group. They are expected to arrive at May 27, and they plan to rally 100,000 protestors to demand the Impeachment of Rousseff.[22]

About

The Struggle is Real is a phrase usually said to imply hardship. However, the phrase can also be said comically when associated with a small problem or task[1]. The phrase is also mostly used in rap lyrics to depict a hardship called “The Struggle”.

Origin

It’s speculated that the phrase originated from rap lyrics, talking about the hardships of living in the ghetto (usually mentioned in the rags-to-riches genre). This means the phrase might pre-date the Internet itself. When the Internet came around, people started using the phrase as a meme, like in the picture above.

4chan Board-tans

$
0
0

About

4chan Board-tans are anthropomorphized versions of the different boards of the imageboard 4chan. Board-tans exist for nearly every 4chan board and are used to symbolize the different politics between them.

Precursors

Before the idea of the board-tan became popular, several characters were popularly used to represent 4chan in visual media. These included the character Yotsuba Koiwai from the manga Yotsubato!, a cat used to represent founder moot, a blonde girl used to represent former admin W.T. Snacks, and a green-skinned, no-faced figure in a suit to represent the site’s anonymous posters as a collective.

Origin

The origin of using specific characters to represent different 4chan boards can be traced back to “4chan House”, an image of a house occupied by stick figures representing the boards that were active at its creation in 2008, to the then-new /r9k/ board (see below). In October of 2008, a comic by a 4chan user by the name of “Three Angled Blue” created a comic which featured several anthropomorphized boards and playing out the story of a raid on /v/ by /b/ that had happened around the time.[1][3] This comic is considered seminal to the board-tan subculture as it was the first established work that used boards as characters, as well its establishment of /v/-tan’s appearance.

Spread

Also in Autumn of 2008, the idea to create a series based on several anthropomorphized boards was proposed, with /a/, /v/, /co/, and /tg/ all having some say in the project at one time or another. The project was later deemed too off-topic for the site, prompting the website 4chan House to be created, taking its name from the original image on which the anthropomorphized board idea came about. The site hosts a booru-like gallery (refered to as a shimmie) for images of the different board-tans, as well as several boards of its own.[2] Several wikis made for different boards on the site, such as /co/‘s Conservatory and and /tg/’s 1d4chan, feature detailed pages on most of the board-tans.[4][5]

Notable Board-tans

/co/-tan

/co/-tan, sometimes refered to as /co/nrad, is the board-tan representing 4chan’s Comics and Cartoons board. He is portrayed as masked figure wearing a blue coat and a blue fedora with a slip of paper reading “/co/” tucked into the band. He is often seen acting as a detective, and is usually seen as married to /ck/-tan, the board-tan representing the Food and Cooking board. /co/-tan is one of the most popular board-tans, appearing in the highest number of images on the shimmie.[6][7]

/x/-tan

/x/-tan is the board-tan for 4chan’s Paranormal board. She is a pale-skinned young woman with messy black hair, a black skull tank top, and rainbow-colored tights. Most notable of her appearance, however, is her left eye, which is shown to be either a glowing red or black with a red pupil. She is considered shy and intelligent, but also paranoid, and dabbles in witchcraft and conspiracy theories. She is commonly shown to be afraid of /b/ and is said to have been in a relationship with /tg/-tan.[8][9]

/v/-tan

/v/-tan is the board-tan for the Video Games board. He is one of the oldest board-tans, debuting in the Three Angled Blue comics, and has maintained a fairly steady appearance. His design is fairly simple, being that of a young man with a round head derived from the appearance of Rage Guy wearing a t-shirt. He is seen as vitriolic and misanthropic, to the point that his rage allows him to perform many incredible feats of strength. He is occasionally seen alongside Vivian James, who is established to be his daughter, in comics about the GamerGate controversy.[10][11]

/mlp/-tan

/mlp/-tan is the board-tan representing /mlp/, 4chan’s board dedicated to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. She is usually drawn as wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and glasses, alongside a My Little Pony t-shirt. She also occasionally wears a hat to cover up a plastic unicorn horn she is said to have permanently glued to her forehead. She is commonly hated by many other board-tans, especially /v/-tan, though she is usually shown as friendly towards everyone, has a stable friendship with [s4s]-tan, and is currently in a relationship with /d/-tan.[12][13]

/d/-tan

/d/-tan is the board-tan representation of 4chan’s Hentai & Alternative board, and as such is an amalgamation of popular fetishes found there. She is portrayed as either a busty woman with black hair or, more commonly, a monster girl with tentacle hair, three eyes, and horns; both forms are known hermaphrodites. She has the power of transformation, though can only do so at night when her third eye is open. She is said to rape many of the other boards, as proven by the large number of lewd and pornographic pieces of artwork involving her and the other board-tans.[14][15]

[s4s]-tan

Sometimes called Keksandra, [s4s]-tan is a young girl used to portray 4chan’s dedicated shitposting board, Shit 4chan Says. She is often seen with two pigtails, a Top Gun Hat, and an ankle-length dress with an image of a meme on it. Though occasionally drawn realistically, her most popular form is a super-deformed version with noodle arms. She is usually seen carrying Topkek cakes and checking dubs and GETs. She is one of /mlp/-tan’s few friends and, after a raid on [s4s] by /pol/, has been commonly seen harassing /pol/-tan.[16][17]

/a/-tan

/a/-tan is the board-tan used to represent 4chan’s Anime and Manga board. Originally appearing as a girl with black hair in the Three Angled Blue comics, /a/-tan changed over the years into a trap with glasses, flower hair pin, and an ahoge. He is typically portrayed as a tsundere with an elitist attitude toward the other board-tans, especially /v/-tan.[18][19]

/pol/-tan

/pol/-tan is the board-tan who symbolizes 4chan’s Politically Incorrect board. Originally starting as /new/-tan, based off a now-defunct board for News, he was first seen as a typical reporter; after the deletion of /new/, however, he was commonly portrayed as homeless. After /pol/’s creation, he took to wearing a typical Nazi uniform with a black suit and a red Nazi armband. He is often seen as angry and stubborn, and is shown to hold racist, sexist, and anti-Semetic views. /pol/-tan is known to clash with other boards-tans, especially /v/, though his reception is generally mixed as opposed to primarily negative. Known daughterus include Ebola-chan, who may also be related to /x/-tan, as well as Christ-chan more recently.[20][21]

Man Beef[1] was a hoax website run by Chris Ellerby and Joseph Mallett under the pseudonym Joseph Christopherson that purported to sell human meat as well as provide recipes on how to prepare it. Human meat was not actually available to purchase on the website, in order to keep the hoax up the owners of the site explained that this was because they “prefered to deal with our customers on a more personal basis”.

History

The domain ManBeef.com was registered on July 25, 2001[2] and at it’s peak received around 500,000 hits daily. It became so popular that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration launched an investigation into weather or not it actually sold human meat. The investigation was dropped when they found out it didn’t.[3] on July 14, 2001, the site’s founders came forward and exposed the website as a hoax.[4]

Features

While it was online, ManBeef.com featured an “About” section that claimed “ManBeef International Meats” was founded on April 20th 1982, expanded to over 15 countries and has 3 main locations in the United states[5]. The sites “Products” section contained links to other sections such as “Human Meat Products”[6] which claimed to offer various cuts such as boneless rump roast and brisket as well as a section for specialty items such as sausage and jerky[7]. The Recipes section contained fictional recipes such as chili, meatballs, stews, soups, manburgers, goulash, and ribs[8]. The FAQs (frequently asked questions) section contained various answers to questions about storage, shipping, and preparation[9]. The “Contact” page contained a form to presumably contact the owners, as well as a list of email addresses for submitting questions and recipes[10]. The “Policies” page contains information such as a privacy policy and a terms of service agreement[11]. The websites “Merchandise” section contained the only items sold through the website, namely t-shirts, sweaters, mugs, and mousepads[12].

Traffic

As the website has been defunct since 2005, the traffic has been quite low. As such it currently has an Alexa ranking of 15,483,025[13].
