Leggy Lamb

About

Leggy Lamb is a minor character originating from the 1958 Droopy Dog cartoon Sheep Wrecked. Despite appearing for only a few seconds as a joke with no lines of dialogue, the character was embraced by 4chan’s /co/ (Comics & Cartoons) board.

Origin

Leggy Lamb originally appeared in the 1958 cartoon Sheep Wrecked. In the cartoon, a wolf character tries to steal a sheep from a yard; one such attempt at stealing the sheep involved a plunger launched with a bow. Instead of bringing back the sheep, it instead rips some wool off of the sheep; the next shot shows the sheep, who is suddenly anthropomorphized. The name “Leggy Lamb” is derived from the next line said by the wolf:

“Now there’s a right purdy leg a’ lamb!”

Spread

The first instance of Leggy on /co/ was in December of 2012.[1] On February 9, 2013, the segment of Sheep Wrecked featuring Leggy was uploaded to YouTube by the account StealthPornucopia.[2] The name “Leggy Lamb” was given to the sheep in a /co/ thread from May 23, 2013.[3] A page for Leggy was made on /co/’s /co/nservatory Wiki in June of the same year.[4] Other related sheep characters were later created to accompany Leggy: Peggy Lamb, a “naughty” version of Leggy, and Barbra Blacksheep, an even “naughtier” version of Leggy meant to resemble an attractive African-American woman, both of whom were created for pornographic reasons.[5][6] These three sheep form what is called the “Sheep Trio”.

Overview

Lamia is a Monster Girl type composed an human torso and the tail of a snake. Amongst fans of the monster girl genre, lamias are often considered the most popular type of monster girl and frequently used to represent the genre. Although other types of monster girls, such as Catgirls and Foxgirls, have more spread compared to lamias, fans of the Monster Girl genre often consider those exceptions to the rule. This is due to their close resemblance to humans, unlike other monster girls such as lamias. The popularity of lamias grew significantly following the releases of the Monster Girl Quest eroge and Monster Musume manga series.

History

In ancient Greek mythology, Lamia was a beautiful queen of Libya who became a child-eating demon. Aristophanes claimed her name derived from the Greek word for gullet, referring to her habit of devouring children. Some tales say that Lamia merely has snake’s skin around certain parts of here body, whereas other tales claim she has a serpent’s tail below the waist. The latter description of her is largely due to Lamia, a poem by John Keats composed in 1819.[1]

Reception

The lamia’s entry in the Monster Girl Encyclopedia[8] describes the species as extremely intelligent and individualistic, living stealthily with their own kind in small villages or near settlements. They often lurk alongside roads, waiting for a man to pass by to charm them with their magic.

Lamias have a significant following on various online communities. As of June 22nd, 2015, DeviantART[2] brings up over 28,000 images when searching for ‘Lamia’. As of the same date, the image sharing boards Danbooru[3] and Monster Girl Booru[4] each hold over 1,100 images tagged as ‘lamia’, which in the case of Danbooru equals roughly 10% of the total images tagged as ‘Monster Girl’[5] on the site with 11,000. The 4chan archive archive.moe also features over 42,500 results for ‘lamia’.[6] And the r/Lamia sub-Reddit[7] has over 1,200 subscribers.

About

The Solo Jazz Pattern is the name given to an iconic blue, purple and white sketch pattern found on a type of waxed paper cup manufactured at first by Sweetheart Cup Company, beginning in 1992, and later acquired by the Solo Cup Company in 2004. The pattern, which has a long-standing fan base online, rose to mainstream popularity during a Reddit campaign to find its designer in 2015.

The Solo Jazz Pattern

Background

The Solo Jazz pattern was created in the art department of the Sweetheart Cup Company in the early 1991 and began production across a variety of waxed paper products in 1992.[1] In 2012, users of the photo-sharing website dump.fm began re-appropriating the pattern and photoshopping it into different environments – some users estimate that over 100,000 different images using the pattern were created.[4][5] These images spread across Tumblr and Reddit, often used in reference to nostalgia for the 1990s. A dedicated Facebook page was created on February 6th, 2012; as of June 2015, the page had more than 4,000 fans.[2] A Tumblr was created the same day, and posted continuously until October 2014.[3] The earliest known mention of the cups on Reddit was an image post in the subreddit /r/nostalgia on November 14th, 2013, which received 86 points (93% upvoted).[6]

In April of 2015, clothing company 1991Inc created a line of clothing featuring the pattern, which quickly sold out after being featured in notable blogs like those of the Laughing Squid and Pee Wee Herman.[7][8]

Notable Developments

Reddit AMA Request and Springfield News-Leader Article

On June 9th, 2015, reddit user mcglaven posted in /r/IAmA looking for the designer of the Solo Jazz pattern with five questions and claiming that Google searches had turned up nothing about their identity.[1]

1. Did you get paid well for your work? Did you get royalties?
2. Did you anticipate how ubiquitous this image would become?
3. How long did you spend on this design?
4. What does it feel like to have something you designed become a part of 90s culture that will be remembered for generations?
5. Where were you in your career when you came up with this design? Did it hurt or help it?

One reply was from user pdschatz, who claimed to have been one of the original re-appropriators of the image on dump.fm; the user claimed that he had emailed Solo Cup to find out more, and had learned that it was designed by a woman named Gina in 1991 in a design contest.

From there, a journalist named Thomas Gounley picked up the search for a newspaper called the Springfield News-Leader, in Springfield Illinois, the region in which the cups were manufactured. He was able to track Gina down to Aurora, Illinois, and interview her for his story. He began with the five questions asked by mcglaven on Reddit.

The Confederate Flag Debate

$
0
0

Overview

The Confederate flag, also known as “Dixie flag” or “Southern Cross,” is the most well-known variant of the three national flags adopted by the Confederate States of America (CSA) during its existence in the American Civil War. In the United States, public display of the flag has been a long-standing issue of national debate due to its historically symbolic association with the southern states’ support of slavery.

Background

The Flag

The Confederate flag was designed in 1861 by William Porcher Miles, the chairman of the CSA’s Flag and Seal committee, as a contender for the third national flag of the southern states, though it was ultimately rejected in favor of Arthur L. Roger’s “The Blood-Stained Banner.” Instead, Miles’ design was chosen as the official battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (shown below, left), representing General Robert E. Lee’s troops from its adoption in 1861 until the fall of the Confederacy in 1865, and a rectangular variation was similarly adopted as the battle flag of the Army of Tennessee (below, right).

Post-Civil War Usage

Though never recognized as one of the official national flags during its existence, the flag gradually emerged as a symbol of the American south and its regional pride among the traditionalist white population in the decades following the end of the Civil War. However, the usage of the Confederate flag was mostly limited to the political minority in the southern states until the mid-20th century, when it enjoyed a large-scale revival as the official emblems and battles of several South-based U.S. military units during the World War II. In 1956, the Confederate battle flag was re-introduced into the official state flag of Georgia.

Notable Developments

South Carolina Capitol Flag Protest (2000)

Following the revival of the Confederate flag’s popularity in the post-World War II era, the propriety of its usage in public and official functions, as well as the symbolic significance of the flag itself, soon became a hot-button issue across the country, which culminated into its first major breaking point in 1997 with the efforts of civil rights activists’ campaign to remove the Confederate flag from the dome of the Capitol building. In 2000, the battle flag was removed from the top of the Capitol’s dome by law in South Carolina, however, with a caveat that any further alterations of tributes to Confederate history would require the 2/3 majority consent of the lawmakers. In addition, a smaller flag was erected as a partial replacement on the lawn of the state house.

South Carolina Capitol Flag Protest (2015)

In June 2015, the debate saw its largest resurgence yet in the wake of the tragic Charleston Church Shooting by a lone white supremacist gunman. Due to the racially charged nature of the attack, as all nine victims were African Americans, and the subsequent findings of the suspect’s fascination with the Confederate flag, many on Twitter and the news media quickly raised issue with the Confederate flag still flying at the South Carolina State House in Columbia. On June 22nd, in response to the public backlash, the Republican governor Nikki Haley urged state legislators to ban the public display of Confederate flag on government sites, followed by the the state house’s approval of a legislative hearing to consider the ban on the next day.

#TakeDownTheFlag

Shortly after the Charleston mass shooting in June 2015, an anti-Confederate flag social media movement was launched under the hashtag banner #takedowntheflag[10], which grew in size as many news sites joined in on to promote the protests. On MoveOn.org[8], a petition against the display of Confederate flags in government buildings has garnered over half a million signatures, while major retail companies like Walmart, Target, Amazon, eBay and Etsy have pledged to discontinue carrying any confederate flag-themed merchindise.

Parodies

The Onion has mocked the official use of the Confederate flags in southern states since as early as November 4th, 1998 in a parody headline that reads “Georgia Adds Swastika, Middle Finger To State Flag”[1] and a photoshopped image, followed by a faux-public opinion column on the confederate flag controversy in South Carolina on January 26th, 2000. Due to its strong association with white supremacy in gang culture and pop culture, the flag is quite often incorporated into portrayals and satires of Murican stereotypes in popular culture and internet memes.

Polls

In 2011, a Pew Research poll showed that 30% of Americans felt a “negative reaction” upon being shown the Confederate flag, while 9% had a positive reaction and the majority felt indifferent about it.

About

Immediately after its broadcast, screenshots of Lemon holding up the sign were turned into a photoshop meme with many participants superimposing alternate messages over the original sign.

Origin

Background

In the aftermath of the mass shooting of nine African American churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina on June 17th, 2015, a national debate ensued over whether the display of the Confederate flag should be banned from official government buildings, such as the one flying over South Carolina’s state capitol. That weekend, President Barack Obama appeared on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast for an interview, where the president used the word “nigger” during a discussion about the state of racial relations in America, which prompted a concurrent public discussion on whether it is appropriate to use the slur regardless of context.

Spread

Soon after the broadcast, the popular blog Boing Boing tweeted at Twitter user darth, asking him to photoshop something else onto the sign The tweet received 543 retweets and 388 favorites in less than 24 hours.

In the first video, Lindemann is shown giggling with Reynolds and asks him to take his pants off. In the second part, Reynolds exposes his penis, leading Lindemann to say “this makes me so uncomfortable.” After Reynold’s protests saying “do it,” Lindemann again says “I don’t think I can do this.”

The second video quickly circulated across various social media platforms, with many arguing that Reynolds’ actions constituted sexual assault. That morning, Reynolds announced via Twitter that his account had been hacked and that he would be posting an explanation of the incident (shown below, left). Later that day, Reynolds tweeted two images saying the video was hacked from his iCloud and claiming the content was being misinterpreting by critics (shown below, middle, right).

On June 23rd, Lindemann posted a tweet[7] saying “trust that this is being handled and I’ve been told I can’t comment on it at this time.”[2] In the coming days, several news sites published articles about the incident, including Fusion, Gawker, The Daily Dot, The Daily Mail and BuzzFeed.

Social Media Presence

As of June 2015, Reynolds has accumulated over 4.3 million Vine followers, 2.9 million Instagram[6] followers, 2.31 million Twitter[4] followers and 859,800 YouTube[5] subscribers.

About

Bernard “Bernie” Sanders (born September 8, 1941) is an American politician and the junior United States Senator from Vermont. He has announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential election.

Political Career

Sanders is the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history. A self-described democratic socialist, he favors policy proposals similar to those of mainstream social democratic governments in Europe, particularly in Scandinavia. He caucuses with the Democratic Party and has been the ranking member on the Senate Budget Committee since January 2015.

After unsuccessful candidacies for governor and senator of Vermont, Sanders was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont’s most populous city, in 1981. He was reelected to three more two-year mayoral terms before being elected to represent Vermont’s at-large congressional district in the United States House of Representatives in 1990. He served as a congressman for 16 years before being elected to succeed the retiring Republican-turned-independent Jim Jeffords in the U.S. Senate in 2006. In 2012, he was reelected by a large margin, capturing almost 71% of the popular vote.

Since his election to the Senate, Sanders has emerged as a leading progressive voice on issues like income inequality, climate change, and campaign finance reform. He rose to national prominence on the heels of his 2010 filibuster of the proposed extension of the Bush-era tax rates for the wealthy. Sanders is also outspoken on civil liberties issues, and has been particularly critical of mass surveillance policies such as the Patriot Act.

Sanders announced his intentions to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for President on April 30, 2015, in an address on the Capitol lawn. His campaign was officially launched on May 26 in Burlington. Unlike the other presidential candidates, Sanders will not pursue funding through a Super PAC, instead focusing on small individual donations. His campaign events have been drawing “overflow crowds” around the country.

Online History

Reddit

Even though Bernie Sanders has not been (as of posting this information) covered strongly in the news, the popular online site Reddit has shown a large amount of commentary and support for Bernie Sanders. The first 200 results for Bernie Sanders on Reddit all have over 2000 upvotes and the first 25 results have over 5000 upvotes, and notably all the top 200 results for Bernie Sanders on Reddit are overwhelmingly supportive of him and his policies. Unlike other candidates, Bernie has notably done an AMA on Reddit as well with overwhelmingly positive reception.
