About

Will Sasso’s Lemon Vines are Vine videos in which Canadian actor and comedian Will Sasso[1] is shown completing a normal activity before surprisingly spitting out a lemon.

Origin

Sasso uploaded his first lemon Vine titled “Facing personal challenges head-on.” on February 19, 2013, depicting him looking at the fruits displayed in the grocery store. After returning to his car with a bag of lemons, he is shown spitting one out of his mouth seemingly out of nowhere. As of August 2013, he has uploaded multiple other videos of this nature, however lemons are not always present prior to his final spit.

Spread

On February 27th, one of Sasso’s lemon videos was chosen as a Vine Editor’s Pick.[4] As early as March 3rd, other comedians on the site began to parody these vines including Adam Goldberg[2] and James Urbaniak.[3] On March 5th, entertainment blog Splitsider[5] declared the lemon videos Vine’s first meme. Also in early March, Sasso’s lemon Vines were featured on Animal NY[6] and Vulture.[7] On March 19th, YouTuber Alex Davidson uploaded a compilation video featuring a montage of Sasso’s lemon Vines, which has accrued more than 4.7 million views as of August 2013.

The compilation was reposted to CollegeHumor[8] the following day before being shared on the /r/Videos subreddit[9] on March 21st, where it gained 16,269 upvotes, 2,481 points overall and 936 comments before being archived. Over the next two days, the video was shared on Viral Viral Videos[10], Gawker[11], WebProNews[12], The Huffington Post[13] and Laughing Squid.[14] On April 3rd, 2013, Cartoon Network uploaded a parody video of Sasso’s vines featuring the Adventure Time character Earl of Lemongrab (shown below, left) appearing as both the lemons Sasso spits out and Sasso himself. Three months later, on July 4th, the lemon Vines were featured in an episode of YouTubers React by The Fine Brothers (shown below, right).
