About

Bomberman is a popular action video game franchise developed by Hudson since 1983.^[1] Its background theme songs have been a popular musical resources for MAD videos on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) since late 2008.

Origin

In this video game franchise running over decades, popular songs as a resource for online parodies are these comical battle theme songs in SNES era: “Battle 1” in Super Bomberman 2^[2] (shown below, left) and “Extreme Chaos” in Super Bomberman 5^[3] (shown below, right). Both songs were written by a Japanese video game composer Hirohiko Fukuda.

These songs began to be introduced into MAD videos in September, 2008 when a participant in NND’s monthly MAD video uploading event featured “Battle 1”^[4], and an AirmotoMAD utilizing “Extreme Chaos” was uploaded in the end of that month.^[5] Since after that, more than 200 of MAD videos utilizing these songs have been posted to NND. these videos are given the tag named “Bomberman MAD” (Japanese: ボンバーマンMAD).^[6]
