Ellen DeGeneres Oscar Selfie refers to a selfie taken at the 86th Academy Awards on March 2nd, 2014, by the ceremony’s host Ellen DeGeneres. The photo included DeGeneres with numerous celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, and Bradley Cooper. with the caption, “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars” DeGeneres wanted to set a Twitter record with the most retweets in Twitter history.
Origin
During the Academy Awards ceremony DeGeneres approached Meryl Streep telling her she wanted to take a selfie with her and tweet it in an attempt to break the record for most retweeted photo, a title previously held by a photo of President Obama and the first lady embracing with the caption “four more years.” tweeted after he was elected to his second term. As DeGeneres and Streep prepared to take the photo, other actors in the audience jumped into the photo, with the photo eventially including DeGeneres, Streep, Jared Leto, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Lupita N’yongo and her brother, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum, and Angelina Jolie. She tweeted the photo at 10:06 PM EST that night.
