About
90s Kids is the name for the generation that grew up in the 1990s, and reminiscence about television programs, video games, and other media from their childhood.
Origin
90’s Kids, more commonly known outside the internet as Millenials, were the first generation to grow up with the Internet. Therefore, they began to use the internet as a way to connect and share their nostalgia of media.
Some notable media that were popular with the 90s childhood were Doug,The Powerpuff Girls,The Legend Of Zelda (Ocarina of Time in particular), Pokemon and Grunge Music.
Spread
As of April of 2014, there are countless Facebook pages dedicated to 90’s Nostalgia, including Things 90’s Kids Realize,You Know You’re A 90s Kid If, and 90’s Kids Only.
The blog Things 90’s Kids Realize was created in 2010.
On August 21st, 2011, BuzzFeed published the article 25 Ways To Tell You’re A 90’s Kid.
Influence on Other Subcultures
Several modern subcultures may have been influenced by 90’s nostalgia. Besides the aforementioned Pokemon and Zelda fandoms, members of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fandom may have wanted to join because the show’s creator, Lauren Faust, was a writer for The Powerpuff Girls. The Furry Fandom as we know it today may have its roots in the Sonic The Hedgehog fandom, as well as cartoons such as Tiny Toons or Animaniacs (see video below).
Criticisms
Some have criticized 90s kids for not being accepting of new media. 90s kids that act in this manner are often referred to as Nostalgiatards or Nostalgia Brats.
In the Pokemon fandom, the term Genwunner is often used to describe those who only like the first generation of Pokemon games, and openly dislike all others.
