The heartbleed bug is a fault in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic which allows exploters to use the bug to gain acsess to a SSL server private keys by reading its memory
Origin
The bug comes from a fault in the programming of the software, those affected are OpenSSL 1.0.2-beta, and OpenSSL 1.0.1.
Spread
The bug was discovered on April 10, 2014, but audit logs indicate that it was known for about five months prior to re-discovery
Since then most affected sites have patched the issue.
