About
Miyazaki Troll Quotes refers to a series of statements attributed to the Japanese film director, animator, and writer Hayao Miyazaki that are either fake or taken out of context. The quotes typically convey attitudes of disdain, disgust, and regret towards entertainment media, anime, weeaboos, and otaku culture.
Origin
The first istance from Miyazaki’s disgust against otakus comes from an interview to the japanese website Golden Times published on January 27, 2014.[2] In the interview, he claims the problem of the anime industry is that it’s full of otakus. A transcription of the interview was published 3 days later on RocketNews24.[1]
You see, whether you can draw like this or not, being able to think up this kind of design, it depends on whether or not you can say to yourself, ‘Oh, yeah, girls like this exist in real life. If you don’t spend time watching real people, you can’t do this, because you’ve never seen it. Some people spend their lives interested only in themselves. Almost all Japanese animation is produced with hardly any basis taken from observing real people, you know. It’s produced by humans who can’t stand looking at other humans. And that’s why the industry is full of otaku!
Spread
On January 26th, 2015, Imgur user ondaheightsofdespair submitted two GIFs of Miyazaki with incorrect captioned quotes, expressing extreme dissatisfaction with the state of anime and otaku culture, in a post titled “Old sage drops some wisdom.” It reached the front page of Imgur, receiving over 8,800 points.[3]
