About

Catgirls, also known as Neko or Nekomimi, is the name given to any female character with cat traits, normally defined by having cat ears, tails, and sometimes even cat paws. There are several differences between a catgirl and cat furry, being the main one that a “cat furry” looks more like human with an actual head and fur of a cat, while catgirls focus more on the human aspect then the cat. Catgirls have become a popular trope on anime.

History

The earliest instance of the female-cat hybrid is Bastet, the Egyptian goddess of cats, protection, joy, dance, music, and love.[1] The first modern story which introduced a cat ear’d character is The 4th of Narcissus Month (水仙月の四日) by Japanese author Kenji Miyazawa on 1924.[2]
