Pastel Goth, also known as “nu goth” or “soft grunge,” is a fashion trend marked by pastel-colored apparel and hair accompanied by alternative-style clothing often associated with the “goth” subculture.
Origin
On January 27th, 2012, the Fuck Yeah Pastel Goth Tumblr[2] blog was launched, which highlights notable examples of pastel goth fashion (shown below).
Spread
On June 13th, 2012, Urban Dictionary[1] user catsarecoolokay submitted an entry for “Pastel Goth,” defining it as a fashion trend popular with girls on Tumblr (shown below).
On July 8th, a Facebook[4] page titled “Pastel Goth” was launched, which gathered upwards of 43,000 likes in the next three years. On March 30th, 2014, YouTuber Alexa Poletti uploaded a pastel goth makeup tutorial video, which gained over 1.5 million views and 3,000 comments in the first year (shown below). On April 13th, BuzzFeed[3] published an article about the fashion trend. On October 28th, MTV[5] published an article titled “22 Items For Your Pastel Goth Starter Kit.” On November 22nd, YouTuber TiffyQuake posted another pastel goth makeup tutorial (shown below, right).
