Unfriended Trailer Parodies are videos mocking the trailer for the 2015 American horror film Unfriended, which features a group of high school students who are terrorized by the ghost of a girl who committed suicide after being cyberbullied.
Origin
On January 12th, 2015, the MTV YouTube channel uploaded the official trailer for the upcoming horror film Unfriended, depicting a group of high school students who are terrorized by an unknown person while video chatting online (shown below). In the first four months, the video gained over 13 million views and 18,000 comments.
Spread
On the following day, the “Unfriended Memes” Facebook[1] page was launched. On January 18th, 2015, Viner Bryan uploaded an edited clip from the trailer, featuring a young boy saying “hello motherfucker” (shown below, left). In the next three months, the video received more than 424,000 loops, 990 revines and 940 likes.
On January 20th, YouTuber I Am Minion uploaded a compilation of Vine remixes of the Unfriended trailer (shown below, left). On January 21st, YouTuber twaimz uploaded footage of himself reacting to the Unfriended trailer, garnering upwards of 1.1 million views and 4,300 comments within three months (shown below, right).
On January 27th, 2015, YouTuber Shane Dawson uploaded a parody of the Unfriended trailer, in which a blonde girl kills herself after being urinated on (shown below). In the next several months, the video accumulated over 2.9 million views and 5,700 comments.
