About
“REEEEEEE” is an expression used to articulate intense rage or frustration. Normally associated with Angry Pepe images and /r9k/ users, it’s a reference to the sounds some frog species make when they’re agitated, although also can be interpreted as the stereotypical noises made by individuals with severe autism disorder.[11]
Origin
Frogs have been known to scream to ward off predators. [12][13] One of the earliest known videos of a frog screaming online was uploaded on October 25, 2009, titled Amazing: Frog screams out “Weed Poop”. This video would later one become even more popular with a screenshot of a comment, and spread to humor content aggregator clickbait websites such as Buzzfeed[14] or Smosh[15]
After the rise in prominence of Pepe the Frog on 4chan, the first use of the expression can be found on a post submitted on 4chan’s /r9k/ board on December 27th, 2014. The post features a Angry Pepe picture along with the message that includes the expression “REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE” at the end.[7] The expression could be inspired by a post submitted two days before, featuring a Angry Pepe image and the expression “AAAAAAAAAAGHGHG”.[6]
Spread
The expression use remaint dormant during the following weeks, but on January 23rd, 2015 a series of posts featuring images of Angry Pepes started featuring “cries” of frustration on their posts appeared.[6] On January 31st, 2015, a thread submited on the same board featured a picture of Pepe barfing accompanied with the expression.[1] The same thread also featured audio clips of users reading the expression. During the following weeks more posts included the expression.[9]
On March 5th, 2013, youtuber Booze Rivers uploaded a video called “33 screaming frogs”, featuring frogs making noises. During the first months of 2015, /r9k/ users started spamming on the comment section on videos of screaming frogs with messages including the expression.
FUCKINGNORMIESREEEEEEE
“FUCKINGNORMIESREEEEEEE” is a catchphrase used to articulate rage against ‘normies’, and associated to the catchphrases “Fucking Normies”, “Get out of my board” and “Fuck off normies”. On /r9k/, those catchphrases are normally featured on responses to “normie” comments, as a way to state that they aren’t welcome on the board.[2][3][4][5][10] This inspired a series of threads where /rk9/ users would record themselves while saying the phrases. One of them was featured on a video uploaded on February 1st, 2015 by Youtuber GoldenSodaXbox, featuring a frog and the audio line. On February 24th, 2015, youtuber The Dank Memester uploaded a video called “NORMIESGETOUT”, featuring various audio clips of the catchphrases. In less than two months the video got arround 100,000 views.
The audio clip inspired various parodies and was featured on other videos, with various videos featuring the lines from /r9k/ audio clips.
