Ball Swiborg (Шар Свиборга) is a 3D model of a sphere with a facial texture applied to it. Swiborg, which was first posted to the Russian game development forum Gamedev.ru in 2007, gained a following for its stern looks, and was categorized as being “brutal and heartless”.
Origin
Swiborg originated in a thread from June 12, 2007 on the forums for the game development website Gamedev.ru; in the thread, a user by the name of zudl asked for advice on a model he had been working on. To show their work, zudl posted several images of a sphere textured with a stern looking face. After receiving some criticism, the texture was changed to something less angered, or, as it was put by zudl, “brutal and heartless”.[1]
Spread
Initial fanworks, which began appearing less than a day after the initial post of the images, began with applying textures to spheres in a similar fashion, and later branched out into photo edits. Because of the descriptionn of the texture as “brutal and heartless”, Swiborg was characterized as a violent, murderous creature. Jokes are occasionally made about Swiborg’s brutality and heartlessness in a similar vein as Chuck Norris Facts.
On December 13, 2007, YouTube user Миха Маус uploaded a video of an animated Swiborg, which has been viewed over 100,000 times. A fansite for Swiborg was created in 2008.[2] On Lurkmore Wiki, which hosts a page for the character, the template used to denote a page marked for deletion uses an image of Swiborg.[3] Swiborg has also been the subject of numerous fangames.
