About

Undertaker’s Screaming Face, also known as TakerFace, is a photoshop meme featuring a cutout image of professional wrestler Mark William Calaway (a.k.a. The Undertaker) intensely staring at wrestler Brock Lesnar while screaming in his face.

Origin

During the WWE SummerSlam event on August 23rd, 2015, the Undertaker defeated Brock Lesnar with his trademark “Hell’s Gate” hold, winning the match by submission. That evening, the @WWEUniverse[1] Twitter feed posted a photograph from the match in which the Undertaker appears to be yelling in Lesnar’s face (shown below). In 24 hours, the tweet gathered upwards of 2,900 retweets and favorites.

Spread

Minutes after the photograph was posted, Twitter user @edsbs[8] tweeted a photoshopped screen capture from the sitcom Frasier with The Undertaker’s face superimposed over actor Kelsey Grammer (shown below, left). The same night, Twitter user @CoreyClayton[5] posted an image of a surprised-looking WWE fan juxtaposed next to the Undertaker photograph with the caption “#Takerface” (shown below, right). According to the Twitter analytics site Topsy,[6] the hashtag #Takerface[7] was tweeted over 1,100 times over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Viner James Dator posted a clip of the Undertaker’s scream edited with the 1999 Anheuser-Busch commercial “Whassup?” (shown below). In the coming days, several sports news sites published articles about the photoshop meme, including SBNation,[2] Sporting News[3] and Larry Brown Sports.[4]
