X Sliding In

X Sliding In (Japanese: すべりこむ○○シリーズ, Suberikomu Marumaru Series) refers to a series of hand drawn animated videos of characters sliding into a cardboard box like Maru the Cat, while playing the Kyu! Kyu! Kyu! Nya~! dance song in background.

Many amatuer illustrators inspired by both of two memes have posted their cute animations to Nico Nico Douga (NND) since the middle of 2009.

Origin

This fad began in the first half of 2009 when Maru’s videos on YouTube were getting explosive popularity on the web. The first instance introducing Maru’s famous movement, sliding into a cardboard box, into hand drawn animations was a derivative of Touhou fandom. The video titled “Chen Sliding in” (すべりこむちぇん) featured Chen, a well-known catgirl character in Touhou Project, and was made by importing the basic editing style with music from another hand drawn animation meme “Kyu! Kyu! Kyu! Nya~! dance”.

It was posted to NND on July 21st in that year.^[1]

Spread

Its cute animation and quite convenient editing style, required only four illustrations, soon began being mimicked by other amatuer illustrators.

Their works have been posted to NND with the phrasal template “X silding in” (すべりこむ○○). As of July 2012, the amount of those videos on NND is more than 350.^[2]
