About

You Are Already Dead (Japanese: お前はもう死んでいる; Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru) is a catchphrase from the manga and anime series “Fist of the North Star”: (Japanese: 北斗の拳; Hokuto no Ken). The catchphrase is often combined with an image of the lead character Kenshiro pointing at viewer, which has also gained usage as a reaction image on Internet forums, to suggest someone being in irreversible bad situation.

Origin

Originally premiered in Japan in 1983, the series Fist of the North Star centralized around main character Kenshiro, a master of the martial art style known as the Hokuto Shinken. Unlike other martial art styles, Kenshiro’s Hokuto Shinken attacks through pressure point, through which he attacks the body from the inside. Upon unleashing his attack, such as the signature move Hokuto Hyakuretsu-ken, his victims would be told that they were “already dead” before attack would finally show its lethal effect.

On TvTropes, You Are Already Dead[1] is considered a trope in which lethal attacks take a few moments before their effect is shown. This is commonly done to build atmosphere.
