About

“Rocket Lawnchair” (AKA Rawket Lawnchair) is a catchphrase spawned from the Run-N-Gun game franchise “Metal Slug”. In the game, the in-game announcer will announce the name of the weapon picked up by the players. But in the second game of the franchise, the term “Rocket Launcher” was mispronounced by the announcer as “Rocket Lawnchair”.

Origin

This mispronunciation originates from the Run-N-Gun game “Metal Slug 2” which is released by SNK (Now known as SNK Playmore) in the year 1998. In the game, the player controls a character of his/ her choice and has to shoot and destroy any enemy forces that gets in his/ her way, and a boss is faced at the end of every level. The player starts every level with a pistol with infinite ammo, but can pick up other weapons for increased firepower (with limited ammo). Among these weapons is the Rocket Launcher, it isn’t the most powerful, but it was the announcer’s mispronunciation of the term that made it popular on the web.

Spread

Even though this meme is only used by the Metal Slug community, it is still difficult to tell how far the meme has spread. But it spread mostly as images and references in comments.
