Stone began her acting career^[1] as a contestant on the 2004 reality show In Search of the New Partridge Family. Jim Carrey’s Message to Emma Stone was a satirical video produced by Canadian actor and comedian Jim Carrey in which he expresses his love for Stone. It has been rumored to have been a viral marketing gimmick for his website Jim Carrey TruLife.^[1] The video was subject to a number of remixes and was parodied by other celebrities. On August 24th, 2011, Jim Carrey uploaded a video of himself apparently confessing his love and lust for actress Emma Stone. This straight-faced monologue was first uploaded onto Vimeo as a private video and publicly posted on Jim Carrey’s newly-launched website Jim Carrey TruLife.^[2]

Meanwhile, Emma Stone also created a new YouTube account “EmmaStoneVerified” and re-uploaded Carrey’s video message onto her channel with the following comment:

Paparazzi Photos

On September 15th, 2012, Stone noticed she was being photographed by paparazzi^[8] while with her boyfriend actor Andrew Garfield in New York City. The two created cardboard signs which they held over their faces so the photographers would capture the messages. The signs highlighted two charities, the Worldwide Orphans Foundation and Gildasclubnyc (which supports cancer patients in honor of the late comedian Gilda Radner) and read:

On April 29th, 2014, The Onion announced a plan to launch a satirical viral content site named “ClickHole”^[1] during its presentation at the Digital Content Newfronts conference. Slated for launch in June, the website originally featured an infographic with a tongue-in-cheek “stepy-by-step guide to clicking” and a “Click Me!” button with a real-time countdown to the launch date.

Site Launch

ClickHole officially launched on June 12th, 2014 with a number of satirical BuzzFeed-style lists and celebrity gossip articles, including “16 Pictures of Beyonce Where She’s Not Sinking in Quicksand” and “7 Pricks Who Defied the Odds and Didn’t Go Into Finance.” That day, Redditor RenaissanceGentleman submitted the site to the /r/InternetIsBeautiful^[2] subreddit, where it received more than 6,700 upvotes and 340 comments in the first week.

Features

The site contains separate feeds for articles, videos, quizzes, blog posts and features, with a front page highlighting the most recent additions in each section. The quizzes typically mimic the format of those found on BuzzFeed (shown below, left), while videos are often presented to mock the social justice-oriented media featured on UpWorthy (shown below, right). Clickhole also has its own revenue stream through advertising on the site.

Within one week of launch, ClickHole held a global rank of 39,350 and a United States rank of 4,180 on the traffic analytics site Alexa.^[3]

#NotaCosplayer is a photo-documentary project launched by cosplay culture blog Food and Cosplay to raise awareness of cyberbullying and body shaming within the cosplay community, especially in light of misogynistic stereotypes stemming from the pretentious geek girl. The anti-bullying campaign consists of a series of photographs in which cosplayers are shown with signs featuring negative or disrespectful comments they had received about their costumes.

Origin

On March 9th, 2014, Twitter user Food and Cosplay^[2] introduced the hashtag #NotaCosplayer. On March 13th, he explained the hashtag was part of a project collecting negative comments cosplayers had received while in costume.

On May 15th, he began tweeting out photos of cosplayers holding signs with negetive comments they had recieved while cosplaying, ending the quotes with the hashtag #notacosplayer.

Spread

On March 16th, 2014, Food and Cosplay created an album of photos culled from the Twitter hashtag on the blog’s Facebook page^[3]. He went into further detail describing the photo project, saying:

“Was chatting to a friend about how was told she wasn’t a cosplayer, and found that rude. And then wondered if anyone else experience the same. So I asked cosplayer if they have experienced nasty, negative or rude comments and asked if I can post them. Thought the project went well. It was more to raise awareness of people comments and how they should be more mindful about what they say.”

Within three months the post was shared over 150 times. The hashtag received most of its media attention after Food and Cosplay relaunched the photo project on May 29th, 2014.^[6] He explained he reasons behind the relaunch, saying:

“Lots of you have asked me to do this again to raise awareness of some of the negativity in both public and online, so was happy to do this project again. Now some people may say what is the point of showing the world the negative side of things, for one reason, to show these people that cosplayers do read comments and they are hurtful. Now you may also say, “they are in the public eye, they are bound to get them and need to learn to live with it or ignore it” and to that I have a zero tolerance to negative comment regardless if was meant in a joking way. Also everyone is different so some people will take the comment more personally then another cosplayer.

On June 2nd, the New Statesman^[5] published an article published “’You’re not a real cosplayer’: since when did dressing up for comics conventions lead to bullying?" which highlighted the photo project.

Garnett-Paul Spears was a five-year-old boy and the subject of Garnett’s Journey, a personal blog run by his mother Lacey Spears to chronicle his lifelong battle with chronic illnesses, who mysteriously died as a result of a lethal-level intake of sodium during a hospital visit in June 2014. Shortly after Garnett was pronounced brain dead, Lacey Spears was charged with murder on suspicion that she poisoned her son with a fatal dose of sodium, which prompted many to speculate that she had been making her child ill for online attention and sympathy, a psychiatric disorder known as Münchausen syndrome by proxy.^[4]

Background

On June 3rd, 2011, Spears launched the blog Garnett’s Journey^[1] on Blogspot to write about her experiences raising her chronically ill son as a single mom without the support of his father Blake, a man whom she claimed was a deceased police officer but revealed to have been fabricated.

In 2012, the pair moved to Chestnut Ridge, New York. On January 17th, 2014, Spears brought Garnett-Paul to the Nyack Hospital in New York state, informing staff that her son was suffering from seizures. Two days later, Garnett-Paul’s sodium levels inexplicably rose while Spears was sharing her son’s hospital room. After being transferred to the Westchester Medical Center, doctors informed the New York state child’s services they suspected Spears was intentionally poisoning her son. Police subsequently obtained a search warrant and discovered medical records revealing that Garnett-Paul had been hospitalized a total of 23 times. A neighbor informed police that Spears requested she go inside her home and destroy one of Garnett-Paul’s feeding bags, which allegedly was found to contain high amounts of sodium. On January 23rd, Garnett-Paul died while hospitalized due to complications from the elevated sodium levels.

On March 24th, 2014, The Journal News^[3] reported that after breaking things off with Garnett-Paul’s biological father Chris Hill, Spears began telling people that her son’s father was a deceased police officer named Blake. The article went on to reveal that following Garnett-Paul’s death, Spears accepted Hill’s Facebook request and admitted he was actually the boy’s father. On June 19th, The Journal News^[2] published an article about Spears’ online habits, noting she had posted photographs of a young boy named JonJon for whom she was a nanny on the social networking site Myspace, along with captions and comments claiming to be his mother. The article also revealed that JonJon consistently suffered from ear infections that ceased when he was no longer under Spears’ care.

Yo is a mobile messaging application that allows users to send other mobile device users a text notification that simply reads “Yo.” It was created by Israeli developer Or Arbel as a way to simplify mobile-to-mobile communication.

History

The app was created by iOS engineer Or Arbel^[2] after Moshe Hogeg, the CEO of Tel Aviv-based social investment startup Mobli and his then employer, asked for an app that would allow him to get his personal assistant’s attention with something even easier than a text. The app took Arbel eight hours to create. Yo was launched on April 1st, 2014^[3] and is available to download for free through the Apple Store and Google Play.

Funding

On June 18th, 2014, the Financial Times^[7] announced Yo had raised 1 million dollars^[4] through investors, most of which are connected to Hogeg and Mobile.

Features

With the Yo app users can send a “Yo,” notification using only two taps, which the creator has compared to the eleven taps it would take to send a message reading Yo on the rival app Whatsapp. By double tapping someone’s name you can send a notification which will say “YoYo.”

Reception

As of June 18th, 2014, Yo had gained over 50,000 users who had sent almost 4 million “Yo” notifications. The app has an average 4.5 star rating^[6] in the Apple Store. In less than 24 hours between June 18th and June 19th, the app gained over 170,000 new users. Marina Abramović is a Serbian American performance artist well-known in the contemporary art world for staging a series of conceptual and often provocative performance pieces to explore the relationship between the artist and the audience. On the Internet, some of her more recent works have gone viral in the news and art blogosphere, including the 732-hour silent performance piece The Artist Is Present exhibited at the MoMA in 2010.

Career

In 1976, she began working with West German performance artist Uwe “Ulay” Laysiepen (shown below) to produce a series of influential collaborative performances (shown below), which continued for over a decade until the two decided to end their relationship in 1988 by each walking from one end of the Great Wall of China and meeting in the center.

“Somebody Once Told Me” is the first line of the 1999 Smash Mouth song “All Star.” After appearing in the opening scene of the 2001 animated children’s film Shrek, when the protagonist slams a door, the line became part of a photo set meme involving characters who smashed or slammed things.

Origin

“All Star” was the first single on rock band Smash Mouth’s sophomore album, Astro Lounge, which was released on June 8th, 1999. Shrek, an animated children’s comedy film, was released on May 18th, 2001. In the opening scene of the film Shrek, the protagonist, slams a door open just as the song begins.

This lead to a photo meme which splits a scene from a TV show or movie which features something slamming, or someone being surprised by a slam or loud noise into two parts, one before the slam captioned “some-” and one after the slam captioned “body once told me.”

One of the earliest examples features Pokemon character Brock slamming a door on Ash. The photo set was published by Tumblr user jelly-fishes^[1] on April 9th, 2013. As of June 2014, it had gained over 21,000 notes.

On June 18th, 2014, the Stockton Police Department Facebook page posted a photograph of Jeremy Meeks, a 30-year-old convicted felon who was arrested on felony weapons charges during a gun raid. In the first 48 hours, the post gained over 56,000 likes and 16,400 comments, with many noting how attractive Meeks’ appeared in the mugshot.

On the following day, the Fox40 News Facebook^[4] page reposted the photograph, pointing out the overwhelming reaction the photo was receiving. Slash fiction refers to fanfiction which features a homosexual romantic relationship between two characters. The name comes from the slash (/) put between the characters’ names in the title or description of the fiction, which differs from the ampersand (&) put between the names of characters in platonic pairings.

History

The first widely distributed slash fanfiction was published in September 1974 in the third issue of the Star Trek fan zine Grup. Entitled “A Fragment Out Of Time,” the story fantasized a sexual relationship between Kirk and Spock whose names were never mentioned in the text.^[1] As more stories featuring homosexual pairings were published, authors would use a slash between the two names (“Kirk/Spock”) in their descriptions instead of an ampersand (“Kirk & Spock”). Club Penguin, commonly known as CP, is an MMORPG that is designed by New Horizon Interactive, targeted towards people between the ages of 6 and 14, although the game is open for all ages. Players can chat, play games, throw snowballs, earn Club Penguin coins, and participate with one another in a snowy virtual world. Although the game can be played for free, a membership is required to buy clothes, go into member-only rooms, etc.

Club Penguin Armies

Club Penguin was known for snowball fights in 2005, although it wasn’t long before armies were an idea. The first ever known armies were simply named by the color of the penguin, such as Red and Blue.

The first army to have a leader was Red, who had a leader named Korn. Armies weren’t big in the community just yet, but the earliest known armies participated in what was known as the Color Wars during the Sports Party of 2006. They were very unorganized, due to the fact that they had no website or forum to create plans. They would just simply log on to the Dojo and battle it out. The Color Wars soon officially became to be known as World War I.

After the decline of the Color War clans, the clans evolved into armies and took identity by name and clothing rather than color of the penguin’s skin. Some clans became armies on the Miniclip Forums, the site in which Club Penguin rapidly became it’s #1 game. Miniclip was the center of Club Penguin culture, and many new users originated from there.

A user named Vital Viper found Mammoth as the “Forum Server”, and it became a big location for battles, especially during World War II.

These series of constant battles between these clans and newly formed organized armies is recognized as World War II. Although hundreds of clans were probably made during this period, the main clans and armies that are known to have existed and participated in this era were the Romans, Vikings, Pirates, Penguin Secret Agency (PSA), Army of Club Penguin (ACP), Club Penguin Army (CPA), and the Club Penguin United Nations Space Commission (CPUNSC).

Armies like the Underground Mafias Army (UMA), Club Penguin Marines (CPM), and the Nachos were still forming, or in the Nachos’ case, still a clan. The ACP, Romans, and the CPUNSC were the first armies to officially organize on the Miniclip forums.

The Purple Republic is a group originating on 4chan’s /v/ board dedicated to raiding Club Penguin servers, similar to the Pool’s Closed phenomenon associated with Habbo Hotel.

The members of the Purple Republic raid Club Penguin servers with purple-colored penguins wearing miner helmets, refer to each other as PR, and treat any color other than purple as an inferior race of penguin.

Adios España! (Goodbye, Spain!) is a catchphrase used by international football fans to make fun of Spain’s unexpectedly poor performance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and their subsequent group-stage elimination from the tournament in the group-stage.

Background

As of June 2014, the Spanish national football team is the reigning World Cup and European champions, ranked at #1 in the FIFA world rankings, having won three consecutive major continental tournaments, Euro 2008, 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. Spain’s fantastic performance has been frequently praised by sports experts and news commentators as one of the best international sides in world football history, along with their pursuit of Tiki-taka, a style of play characterized by short passing, maneuvering through various channels and maintaing possession. The concept, which originated as a traditional approach of the Spanish pro-football team FC Barcelona under the direction of Johan Cruyff and evolved through his successors since the late 80s, became a hallmark of the Spanish national squad, as well as a worldwide trend, in the late 2000s. On top of it all, Spain missed a critical opportunity to catch up in the 53rd minute when Busques failed to tap-in a promising cross into a goal. After suffering a second-consecutive loss, the defending champion was effectively eliminated from the tournament.

Prior to becoming an advice animal, the photograph was featured in “sexy mugshot” compilation posts on various websites. The meme was sparked by a mugshot of Florida resident Meagan Renea McCullough, who was arrested on July 25th, 2010, for driving under the influence. On August 9th, 2012, the photograph was included in a compilation of mugshots featuring attractive women on the men’s interest blog The Chive.

Jazz Hands Mugshot

On May 20th 2014, Hypervocal^[1] published the mugshots of Sandra Grohman, a Texas woman sentenced to 180 days in jail after she caused her baby to fall out of its stroller while she was intoxicated. The mugshot features Groham with her hands fanning out from the sides of her face in the style of traditional Broadway “jazz hands.” The mugshots were featured on many sites including Buzzfeed^[2] and Death and Taxes.^[3]

Jeremy Meeks’ Mugshot

Jeremy Meeks’ Mugshot is a police booking photograph of convicted felon Jeremy Meeks who gained much notoriety online after the picture was posted on Facebook in June 2014. The image inspired an advice animal image macro series with captions word playing on his attractiveness, in a similar vein to the advice animal characters Ridiculously Photogenic Guy and Attractive Convict. On June 18th, 2014, the Stockton Police Department Facebook page posted a photograph of Jeremy Meeks, a 30-year-old convicted felon who was arrested on felony weapons charges during a gun raid. In the first 48 hours, the post gained over 56,000 likes and 16,400 comments, with many noting how attractive Meeks’ appeared in the mugshot.
