-Dere is a slang suffix used in a certain set of Japanese words each focused on a different personality. The suffix comes from the Japanese term “deredere” which means “exhausted”, “to laze around”, or in this case, “love-struck”.^[1] The terms are most often used to describe girls. There are currently four main -dere types: Tsundere, Yandere, Kuudere, and Dandere.

4 Main Types of -Dere

Tsundere

Tsundere is a term used to describe a character who is generally cold, hateful, and angry towards their love interest, often denying their feelings for him/her when confronted on the subject. As the story progresses, the character usually becomes more open about their feeling and will eventually confess to their love interest. The term is a portmanteau of “tsuntsun” meaning coldness, hatred, and/or bluntness and “deredere”, meaning love-struck.

Notable tsundere characters include Taiga from Toradora (shown below, left) and Rin Tohsaka from Fate/Stay Night (shown below, right)

Yandere

Yandere is a term used to describe a character who is obsessed with another character, often violently. Yandere characters will usually appear normal at the beginning of a series, while progressively becoming more violently obsessed with another character, often times going so far as to kill people who they believe are a threat to their love interest. The term is a portmanteau of “yanderu”, meaning sick or mentally ill and “deredere”, discussed above.^[2]

Notable yandere characters include Kotonoha Kastura from School Days (shown below, left) and Yuno Gasai from Mirai Nikki (shown below, right).

Yangire

Yangire is a sub-category of the -dere group. Yangire is a portmanteau of “yandere” (discussed above) and “kireru” meaning “to lose one’s temper”. Yangire is a term used to describe a character who has sudden mental breakdowns. Yangire characters behave similarly to yandere characters but are not motivated by obsession.

A notable yangire character is Rena Ryugu from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

Kuudere

Kuudere is a term used to describe a character who does not appear to care about their love interest at all, generally being perceived as cold. As the story progresses the character will generally start to open up. Kuudere characters should not be confused with tsundere charcters. A kuudere character will generally act indifferent towards their love interest while a tsundere character will be actively agressive. Kuudere is a portmanteau of “kuu”, the Japanese pronunciation of the English word “cool”, and “deredere”, discussed above.^[3]

A notable kuudere character is Kanade Tachibana from Angel Beats (often referred to as the “Queen of Kuudere”).

Dandere

Dandere is a term used to describe a quiet, or shy character. Dandere characters are usually quiet and shy when talking to their love interest. As the story progresses the character will usually become more confident in the presence of their love interest and will often find the courage to confess their feelings. Dandere is a portmanteau of “danmari”, meaning silence, and “deredere”, discussed above.^[3]

Notable examples of a dandere characters include would be Hinata Hyuga from Naruto (shown below, left) and Yuki Nagato from The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan (shown below, right).

Fandom

Many people have created personas or OCs (original characters) of themselves having one of these four personality types on websites such as DeviantArt. The most commonly used personality types are yandere (below, left) and tsundere (below, right), but kuudere and dandere are sometimes used as well.

Tsundere Sharks is a photoshop meme which depicts sharks blushing and stating phrases such as “It’s not like I like you…”, a stereotypical tsundere phrase.

On March 12th, 2004, Urban Dictionary^[1] user Mel submitted an entry for “shower beer,” defining it as “an alcoholic beverage one consumes while cleansing himself.”

In April 2006, the Shower Beer Buddy product was placed for sale on Amazon.^[3] On December 13th, 2011, the /r/showerbeer^[2] subreddit was launched as a page to share photographs of people consuming beers in the shower. In the first three years, the subreddit gained over 28,000 subscribers. On March 29th, 2013, the site ShowerBeer.org^[4] was launched, which highlights social media posts about shower beers. On December 11th, The Daily Dot^[7] published an article titled “The Internet history of the showerbeer.” The same day, Esquire^[6] published an article titled “Ode to Showerbeer.”

Internet Presence

Katya was first discovered by 4chan’s /int/ (International) board in early 2013.^[1] An image of her was posted to content aggregator 9gag later that year on July 9, where it gained nearly 50,000 upvotes and over 2,000 comments.^[2] Several Facebook fanpages were created for her, with the most popular gaining over 100,000 likes as of April 2015.^[3]

Many images of her were taken from her Instagram account, where she went by the name mad_minami; this account, however, has been deactivated.^[7] A video taken from this Instagram page which was uploaded to YouTube in 2014 has gained over 77,000 views. She also has an account on the Russian social networking site vk.com, although this too has been deactivated.^[6] Several imitator accounts have been made on various websites, most notably on Twitch.

Angel Beats! (known in Japan as エンジェルビーツ! or Enjeru Bītsu!) is a japanese light novel series created by Jun Maeda on November, 2009, and later adapted into an anime series on April 3rd, 2010. Since its creation, the series has gathered a significant fanbase due to its tragic theme and notable ending.

Plot

The story follows Yuzuru Otonashi, a young boy who lost his memory after passing away. He is then enrolled into the afterlife High school which is a limbo like state where people who still have worldly attachments must let go before passing on to the afterlife. Otonashi is then recruited into the Afterlife Battlefront, an organization with a purpose to defeat the student council president for supposedly working for God, who they blame their negative experiences when they were still alive^[1].

Tacticool is a slang term widely used by first-person-shooter (FPS) video gamers on 4chan’s /k/ board (weapons) to describe any weapon, such as firearms and knives, equipped with accessories or supplements that may be deemed impractical, unnecessary or even counterproductive to the purpose of the task at hand.

Origin

On September 5th, 2004, the earliest known definition of the slang term “tacticool”^[1] was submitted to Urban Dictionary by user Lars From Mars, although the description of its usage slightly differs from the most common way it is employed:

Derived from the word “Tactical”.

1. Descriptive word for equipment or clothing that does not have any tactical purpose; but looks cool.
2. A person who is a city dweller; but wishes to look like an warrior or as if they are/were in the armed forces.
3. Appearance that mimics military or martial arts.
Ex: Hummer H2 is a very tacticool SUV.

On May 16th, 2006, the earliest known example of such weapon equipped with superfluous accessories was posted on the military and weaponry discussion forum International Military Forum.^[4] The image featured an edited photo of an armed man carrying a gun with numerous attachments.

“Let The Bodies Hit The Floor” is a lyric from the 2001 song “Bodies” by the American nu metal group Drowning Pool,^[1] which has often used in dubbed remix videos online in a similar vein to the 2002 nu metal song “Crawling” by Linkin’ Park.

Origin

On May 14th, 2001, the song “Bodies” was released as the lead single for Drowning Pool’s debut album Sinner. According to the band’s lead singer Dave Williams, the song is about dancing in a mosh pit at a rock concert.^[2] On December 18th, 2006, YouTuber RheannonDawn uploaded the music video for the song, which gained over 40 million views and 57,000 comments within nine years (shown below).

Giffany first appeared on the fifth episode of Gravity Falls’ second season: Soos and the Real Girl, being voiced by Jessica DiCicco and animated by famed pixel animator, Paul Robertson. On the epsiode, Soos Ramirez, buys a dating simulator game to help him talk to girls and get a date on his cousin party, but Giffany gets jelaous when Soos talks to other girls and soon tries to “eliminate competition”.^[2] The epsiode, first premiered on September 22nd, 2014, was well recieved, getting arround 0.8 million viewers on its premiere and a 8,7 rating on IMBd.^[3][4]

Boba Fett is an immensely popular character from the sci-fi movie series Star Wars. Despite his limited appearance in the original three movies, he has become a cultural icon, and is usually given the title of being the most popular character from the Star Wars franchise.

Origin

Originally appearing in a deleted scene in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope^[1], Fett did not make his first official appearance until the 1978 animated/live-action special titled, The Star Wars Holiday Special^[2]. The Kylie Jenner Challenge, also known by the hashtag #KylieJennerChallenge, is a viral trend where teenagers post videos or photos of themselves attempting to temporarily enlarge their lips by a suction technique called “the shot glass effect” in order to imitate the look of model and socialite Kylie Jenner^[6]. The trend has been criticized due to the fact that the intense effect can lead to permanent disfigurement and scarring.

Origin

The exact origin of the hashtag is unknown, however Kylie Jenner’s lips became a subject of teen fascination as the model rose to fame. In a November 15th, 2014, interview with E! News^[1], Jenner credited cosmetics for her lip’s appearance, stating:

“I feel like everyone has been talking about it for months, so I’m kind of sick of it…
…My pictures, I pout them out a lot. I think big lips are awesome.”

On February 19, 2015 Tumblr user randomthunk posted a The Stages of PCap Fangirling (“PCap” referring to Peter Capaldi, a British actor who recently took over the role of Doctor Who on the long-running BBC series of the same name.) It identified the three stages and set the template for all future incarnations: first an image of the actor or character smiling and/or being cute, second an image of the same actor or character smoldering, and finally a flailing or otherwise awkward third image.

The second caption (“oh no, he’s hot”) may or may not be a reference to the character Squidward from SpongeBob Squarepants, who delivers the same line via internal monologue in this clip, titled “Squidward’s Gayest Moment”.

Origin

The phrase was originally used by furry writer and artist Jurann Foxtail in 1997. Foxtail’s website’s “About” page has a description of the artist’s fursona in which it describes how the character “even looks like me IRL”.^[3]

Majiresu (マジレス) is a Japanese meme focusing on various Photoshops of an unidentified man. The meme originated on the imageboard 2chan.

Origin

Majiresu was a 2chan user who would post under the aforementioned tripcode. At one point in time, a photograph supposedly of him was posted. Although it was later proven to not be Majiresu, the photograph was found to be funny enough to other 2channers to catch on.^[1]

Many Photoshops of Majiresu were created. Majiresu threads were banned for sometime on 2chan after privacy concerns rose over the man’s identity.

Zettai Yuru-Sanae is the name of a popular Majiresu spin-off featuring the Touhou Project character Sanae Moriya. The joke came about after it was discovered that “Sanae” could rhyme with “Yurusanai”, which was one of Majiresu’s catchphrases.

Yaass, also spelled as Yas, Yaasth or Yas Queen, and other combinations of As and Ss, is an excited affirmative statement or word of encouragement used in favor of someone’s style or appearance. The phrase is often associated with use by gay men.

Origin

Although the phrase purportedly comes from ballroom culture, a gay drag queen dance subculture from the 1980s, its internet origin is easy to pinpoint. According to Urban Dictionary^[1], the phrase Yaass came to prominence after a YouTube video that was posted on August 21st, 2013, of a young man screaming at Lady Gaga as she emerges for paparazzi cameras. The video gained 340,854 views as of April 22nd, 2015.

In the following years, various spellings of the word have proliferated as the video gained popularity. In 2014, VFiles posted a video interview with two separate young men who claimed to be the one screaming at Lady Gaga. One was the owner of the Instagram profile PrinceNeptune, to whom the original video is attributed by Buzzfeed.^[2]

As the video rose to popularity, many other people began filming themselves screaming “Yaass” at Lady Gaga, both on television or in person at her public appearances. Various spellings migrated to image macros and GIFs.

Defective By Design is an anti-digital rights management (DRM) campaign by the Free Software Foundation, which accuses DRM technology of restricting consumer’s ability to freely use purchased movies, music, literature, software and hardware.

Background

In May 2006, the Defective By Design^[2] campaign was launched by the Free Software Foundation non-profit with support by the online advocacy campaign development organization CivicActions. That month, the campaign held an anti-DRM protest at the Windows Hardware Engineering Community conference at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, Washington.^[1]

On June 23rd, 2006, Defective By Design led a phone-in protest against the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), during which over 3,600 people called various recording industry executives to question their use of DRM.

Amazon Tagging Campaign

In October 2006, Defective By Design launched an “Amazon product tagging campaign,”^[3] inviting participants to tag products on Amazon with the “defectivebydesign” tag if they contain DRM and with the tag “drmfree” if they did not.

Day Against DRM

On October 3rd, 2006, Defective By Design held the first “Day Against DRM” event outside of several Apple stores in the United States and United Kingdom, where participants wore hazmat suits and handed out leaflets outlining how Apple used DRM on iTunes and iPod media players.

During the International Day Against DRM held on May 3rd, 2013, Defective By Design held an event in which they rolled out a red carpet at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to deliver more than 22,500 signatures from people opposing including DRM in HTML5 technology.^[5] During the eighth International Day Against DRM on May 6th, 2014, the Electronic Frontier Foundation held a live webinar on YouTube to “educate people about the threats of digital rights management” (shown below). Anglophile is a word meaning a non-English person who admires England and English people and their culture. The term Anglophile is commonly used incorrectly to refer to a person who admires Great Britain or the British isles (known officially as a Britophile). Anglophiles are known for having romanticised views of England and the United Kingdom and some have been known to prefer English culture over that of their own indigenous culture, similar to Japanophiles or Weeaboos.

Origin

The word Anglophile is derived from the Latin “Angli” meaning the English people and the Ancient Greek word “Philos” meaning friend.

Anglophile first appeared in English author Charles Dicken’s book All the Year Round, in which he describes the French magazine Revue des Deux Mondes as “an advanced and somewhat ‘Anglophile’ publication.”

It is unknown who the first non-English Anglophile was although they must have lived after the unification of England in 954 AD.

Anglophiles grew to a notable size during the imperial era due to the British empire and it’s colonies with many non-British people having favourable opinions on England and the UK such as the King of Hawaii who put the Union Jack on the Hawaiian flag.

Anglophiles became increasingly common as telecommunication and transport improved during the late 1800s and early 1900s and the booming British media industry (especially television and music) lead to the Anglophile identity.

The invention of the internet and the web led to Anglophiles forming communities on sites like Tumblr as well as Anglotopia and Anglophiles United.

There has been criticism over Anglophiles, most notably by English and British due to issues also associated with weeaboos (Anglophiles are sometimes called teaboos); some Anglophiles base most of what they know about England and the UK off of British entertainment such as film, television and music as well as outdated or incorrect stereotypes giving an unrealistic, exaggerated view of the country/countries.

Anglophiles have also been known for making the assumption that England is London or that Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are historic and cultural equals to England; a view that many Welsh, Scottish and Irish people view offensive.

By some English and British people, Anglophiles have been viewed as cringeworthy, annoying or creepy due to their obsessive nature often fuelled by misconceptions. Notable phrases found on sites like Tumblr and Pinterest which are often criticised such as If I had a British accent, I’d never shut up and Born in the wrong country, a phrase used similarly to Le Wrong Generation.

Chaiyya Chaiyya is an indonesian viral video created by Gorontalo police officer Norman Kamaru in which he lip sync over 1998 indian song of the same name. Since its debut on March, 2011, the video has gain significant fame with Norman Kamaru becoming a viral video star throughout 2011.

Origin

On March 29th, 2011, Youtube user Ivhal Marley uploaded the video titled “POLISIGORONTALOMENGGILA.mp4” which shows officer Norman Kamaru lip syncing over the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya”. As of April, 2015, the video has gathered over 3.6 million views.

The original song was written by veteran song writter Ghulzar, composed by A.R Rahman, an sang by Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi for the 1998 Hindi Film Dil Se. The song itself is popular in India due to the scene being performed by famous Indian Celebrity Shahrukh khan on top of a moving train^[1].
