The original photo of the horned lizard was taken on April 24, 2009, by Casey Myers Photography^[1] in the Tonto National Forest Campgrounds. On August 17th, 2011, a Tumblr user effington uploaded the original macro^[2] along with another one. The post over 2 years got over 14,381 notes.

On January 17th, 2013, an Imgur user OttoTheBoxerDog uploaded an album of image macros with laughing lizards in them^[3]. Aside from the original image, the album also included its derivatives, each featuring a different species of lizard. On June 12th, 2014, Philcrifo posted an animated version of the original image (pictured below, left) on Imgur^[4]. Over the period of 2 months, the image had gotten over 11,543 upvotes. On June 15th, an edit^[5] of the GIF was uploaded, featuring a likeness of Urdnot Wrex from the Mass Effect series (picture below, right).

The earliest known combined GIF was uploaded to YTMND in 2005, which featured the character Obi-Wan in the 1999 film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace using his force push power to knock over a group of fainting “goats”: (shown below).^[1] The GIF subsequently spawned a YTMND series in which Obi-Wan knocks over a variety of subjects titled “Obi-Wan Hates”.

“Deep Into YouTube” is an expression used to describe a variety of obscure video content found on YouTube that are marked by amateur production value and incoherent narrative, in a somewhat similar vein to the content said to be hosted in the “weird part” of the video-sharing community. However, these videos from the so-called “depth of YouTube” are mainly distinguished from the former by their relatively low view counts and lack of exposure in the social media.

Origin

The exact origin of the phrase “deep into YouTube” is unclear. The earliest known use of the expression in the context of bizarre content found on the video-sharing site was posted on February 5th, 2010 by Student Pilot Forums^[2] member AirVenture, who commented about searching “deep into YouTube” to find a video of a woman regurgitating into a paper bag while flying in a jet airplane.

Origin

On August 4th, 2014 6:20am EST, the official KanColle Twitter account announced that the anime’s preview had gone online^[6]. The video preview on the anime subsequently gained over one million views in less than three days^[5]. While the anime had been anticipated, due to the large Japanese fandom already surrounding the game, one particular scene caught attention. This shot originally shows up 55 seconds in the preview, featuring the Aircraft Carrier Akagi holing a bow while skating on the water.

By 7:00am EST of August 4th^[2], this screenshot from the preview of the began to be used as a template for numerous parodies emerging from the anitwitter subculture. Many parodies feature other characters from the Kantai Collection game, while others used various other popular characters, often from different anime.

Scrabble is an American board game in which players attempt to create words using only the wooden letter pieces left on the board by other players and the seven wooden letters they have pulled at random.

History

Scrabble^[1] was first invented in 1931 by Alfred Mosher Butts who worked in New York as an architect, though the game received an official trademark 17 years later. The game was named by James Brunot who also created the first Scrabble factory. Hasbro gained ownership of the game in the 1980s, and in 1994 the game created two separate collections of eligible words for the game, one for schools and one for tournaments.

Additions to Scrabble Dictionary

On August 6th, 2014, Scrabble added a large collection of 5,000 slang words^[6] to its official dictionary. Among the words added was one chosen by Scrabble fans: geocache. Other additions include bling and emo.^[12] The addition of the new words were covered by many sites on August 5th, including New York Daily News^[9], ABC News^[10] and The Daily Mail.^[11]

Game Play

To play,^[2] two to four players each pull seven wooden tiles each printed with a letter and a amount of points awarded for the successful use of that letter. To begin the game the first player must create a word starting from the square in the center of the board. The next player must build a word off that first word, using one letter and building horizontally or adding a few letters vertically to utilize the entire vertical word. This pattern continues, with each player taking the same amount of tiles they set down from the letter bag. This continues until there are no more tiles, or so few tiles the players can not create any more new words with the tiles they are left with. They then count the points, which are added from the values printed on the letter tiles which can be aided by placing them on double letter score, double word score, triple letter score, and triple word score spaces on the board. Running Drawing is a single topic blog featuring screenshots of illustrations made with the Nike+ mobile app by running down pre-planned routes.

Origin

On June 14th, 2014, San Francisco-based copywriter Claire Wyckoff^[2] launched the Tumblr blog “Running Drawing,”^[1] with her first post featuring a screenshot of a running trail resembling an amateur illustration of a dog (shown below).

Spread

On June 15th, Wyckoff posted a screenshot featuring her Nike+ running trail route at golden gate park, which resembled a drawing of a phallus (shown below).^[3] The same day, she highlighted the screenshot on her Instagram^[4] feed, where it gained over 230 likes in the first two months.

Over the next two months, Wyckoff submitted eight additional Nike+ running route drawings, several of which featured illustrations of penises. On August 5th, both UpRoxx^[13] and Jezebel^[5] published articles about Wycoff’s penis drawings, followed by other news sites in the comings days, including The Guardian,^[6] Metro,^[7] Fast Company,^[8] The Frisky,^[9] Geekologie,^[10] Bustle^[11] and Complex.^[12]
