About

Purity Test is a basic self-administered survey that is designed to assess one’s supposed degree of innocence or spiritual purity through a series of questions on personal habits, such as sex, drugs, deceit and other habits that are generally perceived as vices. The final score is usually displayed in percentage or in points. Following its online emergence through Usenet newsgroups, the meme has branched out into a wide variety of situations and stereotypes, from computer-related tests to political views.

Origin

One of the earliest documented instances of the test has been attributed to The Unisex Purity Test, written in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Baker House sometime before 1980. The first incarnation had two parallel versions, 100 questions each; one for male, and one for female.

Origin:

DayZ: This is a quote from the homepage of the mod DayZ for Arma2: "A 225 km2 open world post-soviet state and one of the areas hit by a new and presently unknown infection which has wiped out most of the world’s population. You are one of the few who have survived and now you must search this new wasteland in order to fight for your life against what is left of the indigenous population, now infected with the disease.

Go Solo, team up with friends or take on the world as you choose your path in this brutal and chilling landscape using whatever means you stumble upon to survive."

Injured Guitar Guy:

There are many people who film themselves while playing DayZ. Some of them found another player who was lying without showing any motion. Suddenly he started to scream for help and that he was in pain. It seemed like his legs were broken.
When they refused to help him, he started to sing songs and play guitar. There were songs from Metallica, AC/DC, Guns&Roses and so on.

But what did the players do who found him? The dragged him around and planed to murder him.

The last words of Injured Guitar Guy, before he went to a better place, were easy: “Hey, dude?!”

“Injured guitar guy died for our sins.”

Background

On January 4th, 2011, Metro Weekly[1] published an article titled “Is Chick-fil-A restaurant against gay rights?”, which reported that the anti-gay marriage organization Pennsylvania Family Institute (PFI) listed American fast food restaurant chain Chick-fil-A as a co-sponsor of two marriage conferences. On January 6th, Chick-fil-A posted a statement on its official Facebook[2] page, downplaying the company’s relationship with PFI by claiming it only provided sandwiches to the marriage seminars.

On November 1st, the LGBT advocacy group Equality Matters[3] published a report revealing that Chick-fil-A’s charitable arm WinShape had donated over $1.7 million to anti-gay groups in 2009. On July 2nd, 2012, Equality Matters[4] published another report, stating that WinShape donated over $1.9 million to anti-gay groups including the Marriage & Family Foundation and the Family Research Council in 2010.

On July 16th, an interview with Chick-fil-A’s chief operating officer Dan Cathy was published in the Christian news service Baptist Press, in which Cathy revealed that the company did support a “traditional family.” On July 18th, Cathy appeared on the syndicated radio show “The Ken Coleman Show” and stated that he believed advocating same-sex marriage would be “inviting God’s judment on our nation.”[5]

Notable Developments

Boston Mayor’s Reaction

On July 20th, Boston mayor Thomas Menino sent a letter to Chick-fil-A COO Dan Cathy denouncing the company’s stance on gay marriage (shown below). The same day, the Boston Herald[9] published an interview with Menino, in which he stated he was looking to block Chick-fil-A from opening any restaurants in the city.

Jim Henson Company Toys

On July 20th, 2012, The Jim Henson Company posted an update on their official Facebook[8] page announcing they had notified Chick-fil-A that they no longer wished to partner with them in the future and that they would donate the payments they received from the company to the LGBT advocacy organization GLAAD (The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation).

Online Reaction

On July 25th, 2012, Redditor absurd_olfaction submitted a post to the /r/atheism subreddit titled “Chick-fil-A damage control FAIL”, which included a screenshot of a Facebook post in which a user profile is exposed for being fake (shown below). A Facebook[6] event was created for “National Same Sex Kiss Day at Chick-fil-A”, which urged people to document themselves kissing a member of the same sex at a Chick-fil-A on August 3rd, 2012.

On YouTube

Several prominent YouTubers uploaded videos chiming in on the controversy, including mention over a proposed boycott (shown below, bottom, right) and a cooking guide for making a “Chick-Fil-Gay” sandwich (shown below, bottom, left).

Antoine Dodson’s Reaction

On July 25th, 2012, Antoine Dodson uploaded a video to YouTube titled “Chick-fil-A?”, showing Dodson drinking from a Chick-fil-A cup while defending his choice to eat at the restaurant. The same day, Dodson uploaded another video titled “Ya’ll made me pull my hair back lol!”, in which he argued that boycotting the restaurant would only hurt the Chick-fil-A’s employees.

One Is Not Amused

About

One is not Amused is an emerging image macro series based on a photograph of Queen Elizabeth II looking disgruntled during her appearance at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in London, United Kingdom. The phrase “One is Not Amused” is derived from another LOLcat image macro series known as X is Not Amused.

Origin

On July 27th, 2012, Queen Elizabeth II attended the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics at the Olympic Stadium. Her entrance to the event was nothing short of a spectacle and a departure from her public image, featuring a pre-recorded film starring Daniel Craig as James Bond and the Queen herself, followed by a live parachuting performance high above the stadium by a stuntman double. In contrast to her energetic arrival, however, she appeared to be bored or even disgruntled at times, particularly during the procession of nations (shown above, left).

Within the hour, some candid photographs of the dour-faced Queen began circulating across internet news sites and blogs. At around 10 p.m. local time, while the ceremony was still ongoing, Redditor tf2fan submitted an image post titled “The Queen isn’t enjoying the Olympic Ceremony” to /r/AdviceAnimals, featuring a photograph of the scornful looking Queen in the V.I.P section with the caption “Kill them all, Phillip. Kill them all” (shown above, right). Meanwhile, the title “One is Not Amused” had been previously used to describe photos of unhappy looking Queen Elizabeth II in an article published by DailyMail in October 2008.

Spread

The original image gained nearly 250,000 views in the first 24 hours, spawned dozens of variations on Quickmeme and quickly spread across the Tumblr blogosphere after it was picked up by Sherlock fan blog Deduce Me Doctor Watson and reblogged by the British stereotype blog You Know You’re British When. The original Tumblr post gained more than 10,000 notes in the first 24 hours. Other derivatives began to surface on Reddit and Tumblr as well, most notably the one captioned “look at all these countries I used to own,” in allusion to the days of the British colonial empire many centuries ago. The image was posted by Redditor Google_vs_Bing and spread across Tumblr, where it gained more than 100,000 notes in the first 24 hours.

KabiKiller Commercials

About

Kabikiller (Japanese: カビキラー, which means “Mold Killer”) is a chlorine mold-remover for bathrooms and kitchens produced in Japan by SC Johnson since 1982.[1]

Nowadays, its TV commercial movie (TVCM) is one of popular subjects for MAD videos on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) because of its manly sound logo.

Origin

TVCMs for Kabikiller have been aired in Japan since 1980s, changed several times and continued telling people its strong bactericidal power annihilating all molds by the roots. In late 2000s, new TVCMs started to be aired, which were narrated by a middle-aged male’s voice and set his shouting of “Kabikiller” to the sound logo for the product. For example, this video below is a bath room version.

Transcript:

Gomu pakkin no kabi wa nega Hukai. (Molds are deeply digging into rubber seals.)

Dakara ochinainda… (Indeed. so hard to remove…)

Konnna tokini wa Kabikiller no shintouryoku (On such occasions, take Kabikiller’s strong penetrating power)

Kabi no ne no oku no oku made kyouryoku shintou (Deeply penetrates to the roots of molds)

Gomu pakkin mo sukkiri (Cleans up even molds in rubber seals.)

Sintouryoku nara Kabikiller (Kabikiller, the best penetrating power)

On NND, 2 early instances of MAD videos reusing this TVCM series were already uploaded in late 2008. One was a derivative of the Paffendorf Dance[2], the other was a musical remix with a soundtrack from Kirby’s Dream Land 3.[3] Each of them rendered surrealistic lulz by a little manly shouting of the sound logo.

Spread

Meanwhile, the trigger of this fad on NND was a ranking-style compilation video for surrealistic MAD videos posted on January 17th, 2010.[4] Since it introduced Kabikiller’s Te-Te-Te- remix, these TVCMs began to spread among many other NND users.[5]

Many MAD editors continues producing video remixes of Kabikiller even though the warning notation, a cliche for chlorine detergents, says “Danger! Do not Mix”. As of July 2012, the amount of videos in this series is more than 300.[6]

Gangman Style (강남 스타일) is a 2012 dance pop single written and performed by Korean pop singer PSY. Since the release of the song and its highly entertaining music video in mid-July 2012, the video has gained more than 8 million views in the span of two weeks and spawned numerous parodies and copycat dance videos on YouTube.

Origin

The song “Gangnam Style” was written and recorded as the title single of the sixth studio album Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1 by Korean singer PSY, who is best known for his quick-witted sense of humor and comical dance moves. Upon its release, the song took off on virtually all Korean billboard charts, portal search sites and online music stores, but it began garnering international attention after the video went viral on YouTube during the third week of July 2012. its signature dance move known as “the horse-riding dance” which combines the stylistic elements of shuffle dancing and hand movements resembling the posture of a horseback rider. The dance was previously introduced through the debut single of another Korean K-pop girl group Girl’s Day in 2010.

Terminology

“Gangnam Style” is a Korean neologism mainly associated with upscale fashion and lavish lifestyle associated with trendsetters in Seoul’s Gangnam district, which is considered the most affluent part of the metropolitan area. In addition, the song’s chorus line “Oppa Gangnam Style” became notable among the English-speaking audiences for its misheard lyrics erroneously referred to as “Open Condom Style” or “Open Gundam Style,” which also went onto inspire several image macros and top-voted comments on the YouTube video page.

Meanwhile on YouTube[6], some viewers began uploading their reaction videos to the bizarre music video, praising it as a prime example of “Asian WTF humor” that has proven to fare well in the Western blogosphere. “American Purpose Quotes” are snippits of lyrics, inspirational phrases, and often times cheesey love quotes, superimposed over pensive photographs of people, landscape, sunsets, couples, etc. They are very popular on Tumblr and have spawned a slew of imitators. The most common style involves the quotes pasted in Photoshop in a block letter sans seriff font with a drop shadow added for effect. The most popular font used is called American Purpose, thus the expression American Purpose Quotes.

Some of the more popular Tumblr blogs employing this type of content are HpLyrikz and ReminiscingOurMoments, as well as KushAndWizdom and KushAndLyrikz. The photos often have a vignette or translucent dark layer added to give a hazy look that makes the bold white letters pop out above the photo. The user’s name is often added in a different font with a smaller size underneath the quote in hopes of generating more followers when said photo is reblogged.

There's no f**king seat for you!

About

There’s no f**king seat for you! (Japanese: おめーの席ねぇから!, Omee no Seki Neekara!) is the most impressive remark in 2007 live-action TV drama series for Life (ライフ), a Japanese manga of bullying in a high school which was written by Keiko Suenobu.[1] It has been lionized among MAD video editors in Nico Nico Douga (NND) due to its cheap rendition and the actress’s too-powerful yell.

Origin

This TV drama was aired from July 2007 to September 2007, and its thoughtless depictions of insidious bullying got much negative reputations. A Japanese wikipedia article for this manga describes that the TV station caught more than 2000 complaints from viewers during the program.[2] Because of this, in contrast to usual Japanese dramas which are frequently re-aired in weekday afternoons, this TV drama has never been re-aired in terrestrial channels.

Meanwhile, the remark “There’s no f**king seat for you!” was appeared 2 times in the drama. One was given from Manami Anzai, the antagonist and the leader of a bullying group, to Ayumu Shiiba, the protagonist of this drama, after she threw Ayumu’s seat and textbooks from a terrace to the ground. This was an opening bell for bullying in the end of the 1st episode.

The other, the source scene of this fad, was in the end of the final episode that was aired on September 15th, 2007. Manami got it from Midori Iwamoto, a quite minor character, by much more dirty manlike yell.

This was the original ending of TV drama series, which was totally opposed to that of original manga series that Manami made peace with Ayumu and chose the path of atonement.

Spread

Its stereotyped plot, the bully went to be bullied on herself, gave awfully poor impression to viewers. Besides, the too powerful yell by Midori Iwamoto in that scene was completely unexpected to them because she had never took any important part throughout the story. Because of these, this ending scene looked very epic and ridiculous for many Japanese people.

It immediately started to be parodied on the Japanese hub sites as usual. 2channel users gave a Shift-JIS art to her, and NND users set it to a subject for MADs.[3]

Among those hundreds of MAD videos, this Kirby Sky High style video below is the most succeeded video that led subsequent increase in popularity to this series. It was uploaded on October 9th, 2008, and have been watched over 2 million times in total.[4]

Spain's Olympic Uniform Controversy

$

Overview

Spain’s Olympic Uniform Controversy refers to various gossips surrounding the official uniform kits worn by the Spanish athletes participating in the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Designed by the Russian fashion firm Bosco Sport, the uniforms quickly became a target of public ridicule and criticisms mainly due to its perceived tackiness and garish pattern designs.

Background

Spain’s official uniform kits were designed by Bosco[1], the same company behind the Olympic uniforms of Ukrainian and Russian athletes, and provided to the team free-of-charge in a special deal. The donation was arranged by the Spanish Olympic Committee in an effort to save the taxpayer money as the country’s economy continues to struggle with massive debt and an unemployment rate of 25%.

The Bosco-made uniform kits were first unveiled to the Spanish public in an article published by the newspaper El País[2] on May 4th, 2012, which was largely met by negative feedback from the readers, one of whom noted that the warm-up suit resembled the costume of “a lion tamer.” The public criticism surrounding the unpopular uniform kits began to heat up during the days leading up to the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, when various well-known Spanish athletes publicly vented their frustration through social networking sites and Twitter.

Notable Developments

One of the first Spanish Olympians to publicly express their displeasure with the uniform kits was the 2008 sprint canoe gold medallist Saúl Craviotto[3], who tweeted a photo of himself looking rather unamused in the polo shirt uniform and España cap while clutching a red-and-yellow patterned backpack in his hands. The accompanying message read:

A number of other athletes soon followed suit in raising issues with the team’s official apparel, such as Spanish hockey player and the 2008 silver medalist Alex Fàbregas[10], who tersely wrote via Twitter “Olympic equipment, there are no adjectives…,” as well as the tennis player Carlos Moya[4] who complainted via Twitter with the message “Looking forward to seeing [tennis player] Feliciano Lopez wearing the official Olympic uniform. He’ll never have worn anything so ugly in his life.”

Lopez responded to Moya’s quip as well, though he apparently took more of a subtle jab by saying “It’s loud, very loud. But it’s what we have, man. Spain is different and it always will be."

Spanish Olympic Committee’s Response

The athletes’ public grievances over the uniform kits soon drew the attention of the foreign press covering the Olympic events, not to mention the Spanish news media outlets’ scrutiny of the process and the decision makers involved, with many commentators criticizing the fact that they were ordered from a foreign company whilst hundreds of thousands of unemployed Spanish idle through their days, unable to find jobs. To this, the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) president Alejandro Blanco responded[5]:

“The outfits are what we have, we cannot change them now, and were decided upon more than a year and a half ago. … “When you measure the difference between paying one and a half million euros of public money and free clothes, there is no discussion.”

Parodies

Meanwhile, some people even took the joke to the next level by creating parody image macros[6] and photoshopped images featuring the notorious uniform kits alongside fictional costumes with similar design patterns.

Dragon Dildos

Editor’s Note: This entry contains suggestive images and content that may not be suitable for all readers. Discretion is advised.

About

Dragon Dildos is a collective term given to a series of above average sized dildos shaped in what’s supposedly a dragon’s penis. On the internet, dragon dildos are often used as an off-topic reaction in threads and greentext stories, or as shock images.

Origin

Dragon dildos first appeared to the large public on the adult sex toy website bad-dragon.[1] The idea for a business surrounding dragon dildos was first announced on December 7th, 2007, by the co-founder of bad-dragon, Varka, on his website Herpy.net[2] as an idea for side-project. The site itself was founded on June 26th, 2008, in Phoenix, Arizona, “to make fantasies real”, according to site description.[3] The products offered on the site are commonly named after a dragon.

Spread

The rather abnormal shape and size of the dragon dildos resulted in numerous reactions online. The Bad Dragon company has it’s own pages on Wikifur[4] and Encyclopedia Dramatica[5]. Although not containing any content, a Facebook page[6] for dragon dildos did gain over 70 like as of August 2012. Tumblr also generates quite some results when looking for dragon dildos.[7][8] Dragon Dildos were also mentioned on Geekologie[9] and Destructoid[11]. The “Drippy Dragon” version also reached 12th place on a Cracked.com listing of the 18 most disturbing sex toys.[10]

On the image board 4chan, dragon dildos are most notably popular on the video game board /v/, although they do get used as off-topic reactions on other boards on occasion. Chanarchive also features several archived threads where people react to dragon dildos.[12][13] Dragon dildos are also a popular topic on unboxing threads, as either reactions posts or in a form of bait and switch trolling.[14][15] These unboxing threads commonly feature a rise in popularity around the release of popular video games involving dragons such as Dragon Age and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.[16]

On Blog hosting platform Tumblr, there is “Team Fortress 2 Memes”, or “tf2memes” for short. It can be found Here . It was created on July 1st 2011, a week after the Uber update and when Team Fortress 2 became a Free to Play game. Since then, it has been a large source for creating and increasing Advice Animals related to Team Fortress. The blog is still running currently and there are a total of 11 templates and collections for Team Fortress Advice Animals. The blog also has other memes not related to Advice Animals or Advice Animals which are not considered good enough for their own section, which are sorted into a Unsorted/Miscellaneous section .

Notable Examples

  • Free to Play/Noob Heavy

The first Advice Animal added to the Tumblr blog, this is commonly in conjunction with things stereotypically done by new players to the game, like thinking the game is just like Call of Duty or being unable to perform basic class mechanics. It’s also sometimes used with stereotypes that older players use to determine if someone is a “Noob” ("He has no avatar, must be F2P).
  • Troll Spy

Used for tactics used by the Spy class that are often considered to be “Cheap” or “Nooby” . Some of the examples include legitimate tactics, doing things in a harder way for effect, or griefing.
  • Sad Pyro

Originating on Meme Generator, this spawned from the neglectful treatment the Pyro got as a Class and the negative opinion he has in the Team Fortress community. These images are usually about either the bad luck Pyro has gotten in certain updates or unlucky experiences in game while playing as the class. This also got some recognition on the Steam Fourms.

Sad Pyro is also a deteritive of the Pyro Sitting Down meme.

About

Annoyed Picard is an image macro series featuring a screen capture of the Star Trek: The Next Generation character Jean-Luc Picard wearing an exasperated expression and captions revealing one’s frustration or incredulous reaction accompanied by the rhetorical “how the fuck?”, “why the fuck?” or “what the fuck?”

Origin

TThe original screen capture was taken from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Ménage à Troi” originally aired on May 28th, 1990, in which Captain Picard recites lines from the sonnets by the English poet and playwright William Shakespeare.

Prior to the arrival of Annoyed Picard, the Star Trek character has long been associated with reaction face images conveying irritability or disappointment, most notably through the Facepalm instance from 2005 and the original instance of WTF is this shit” based on the same screen capture. The Quickmeme[1] page for “Annoyed Picard” was created on January 23rd, 2012, which featured the screen capture of Picard with an outstretched arm accompanied by the caption “Oh come on! / You don’t even know what a meme is!”

Spread

On February 10th, 2012, Redditor rbecks submitted an Annoyed Picard image macro with the caption “Admit it, when you look at me doing this / even you go ‘Ayyyy’” (shown below, left) to the /r/AdviceAnimals[4] subreddit, but it did not manage to reach the front page having received less than 10 votes. On April 17th, Redditor Ayycanadian submitted an image macro with the caption “Who the fuck / let the dogs out?”[5] (shown below, right), which received over 3,200 up votes within three months.

On June 23rd, a new Quickmeme[2] page was created titled “Annoyed Picard HD”, which featured a higher resolution version of the original Annoyed Picard screen capture. On July 9th, Annoyed Picard was listed as the #1 Jean-Luc Picard meme on the rating website Ranker.[7] On July 30th, the Internet humor blog PandaWhale[8] published a post titled “Annoyed Picard Meme”, which featured a compilation of notable examples from the series including an animated GIF version.

The meme has continued to spread on the microblogging site Tumblr under the tag “#annoyed picard.”[3] As of August 1st, 2012, the “Annoyed Picard” Quickmeme page has accumulated over 6,400 submissions and the “Annoyed Picard HD” page has received over 4,700 submissions.
