Work in progress. Editorship is requested.

Darksydephil/DSPGaming (Philip Burnell) is a 30 year old YouTube video gamer personality that is best known for his live commentary on his video game playthroughs. Due to constant trolling and negative backlash towards some of his videos, he has been given the nickname “The King of Hate” and has a fan following.

Origin

Darksydephil began his YouTube career in 2007 on his original channel, Darksydephil. It is rumored that his first playthrough that he did was Fallout 3. He rose to fame with his Heavy Rain playthrough which is considered to be one of his funniest playthroughs of all time.

His popularity was further expanded with playthroughs of other games such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect games, Fallout games, and PS Move games with his best friend John Rambo. In summer of 2010, Phil lost his normal everyday job and as a result, he partnered himself with Machinima in fall 2010 thus making him a full time YouTube employee.

Spread

DSP is also known for his other segments such as Friend Request Ridicule (cancelled), Ask the King, DSP Tries It (cancelled then rebooted), Poorly Cooking with the King (cancelled), Week in Preview, Release Day Unboxing, The Hateful Truth, and Project 7 (cancelled, then rebooted, and is now on indefinite hiatus). He also does annual traditions such as an April Fools special, a Mega Man week, a Halloween special, and an end of the year countdown of DSP’s funniest moments (funniest racist moments in 2010), worse moments (changed to worst gaming trends in 2011), and the best games of the year.

Criticisms and Controversies

People have often been critical of how Phil does his playthroughs. Many critics have claimed that DSP is completely unobservant in some situations and often ignore simple facts about the gameplay which is shown in such playthrough such as the HD remake of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Black Mesa. In his Metal Gear Solid 2 playthorough, viewers noted at DSP’s inability of using the L2 button which activates health rations in the game and also Phil’s failure to use stealth techniques. In part 9-11 of his Black Mesa playthrough, DSP struggled with a crouch jump on a certain platform and has accused the failure to do a crouch jump as a game bug. Phil has been noted for accusing parts of games to be bugged without realizing that the failure to complete a task in the game is actually his fault and not the game’s fault. As a result, Phil’s “haters” have uploaded reaction videos of these moments.

In April 2010, DSP began a playthrough of Splinter Cell Conviction with 13 videos. One day, DSP received a copyright strike from Ubisoft and had his channel taken down. However, Ubisoft claims that they did not send a copyright strike to DSP and it was later revealed that a troll by the name of Steve Jones sent DSP the fake copyright strike. As a result of the Steve Jones controversy, Darksydephil was used as an archive channel to this day. Phil also created a new account called DSPGaming which is used for his current playthroughs, RedDeadDSP which was only used for his playthroughs of Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire due to a previous copyright strike on Phil by Rockstar Games during his GTA IV Lost and the Damned playthrough, DSPFinalFantasy which was used for a playthrough of Final Fantasy XIII, DSPStreetFighter which was used for any fighting games playthroughs, and The King of Hate HD which was used for non-gaming vlogs.

Other controversies included the end of Phil’s Godfather II playthrough which was cancelled due to a nudity strike, and as a result, Phil could not upload a playthrough of Dante’s Inferno due to the nudity. When nudity was involved in Phil’s playthroughs of God of War III, Red Dead Redemption, and Heavy Rain he used funny images to block out the nudity.

In 2011, DSP showcased his hatred of the mainstream media especially after the bashing of Duke Nukem Forever. In July 2011, Phil bashed Playstation Magazine for giving Catherine, F.E.A.R. 3, and Captain America First Soldier the same score of 7/10. He later got into an intense feud on Twitter with freelance game reviewer Mitch Dyer. In October 2012, Phil defended Resident Evil 6 after critics bashed the game. To show his defience to the mainstream gaming media, Phil gave Resident Evil 6 a 9/10 and placed it at #4 on the top 10 games of 2012.

In 2012, DSP was involved in numerous feuds with the popular YouTube gaming personality Toby Turner (Tobuscus Games). The rivalry began when Phil posted a video stating that he was outraged when ads for college football video game NCAA Football 13 which featured Turner appeared on the side of DSP’s videos. Throughout 2012, Phil has often bashed gamers such as Turner, PewDewPie, and IJustine and called them “phony YouTube gaming personalities.” This incident was placed at #2 on DSP’s Worst Gaming Trends of 2012.

Plans for 2013

In January 2013, DSP announced that he was going to make changes to how he would do his playthroughs. The first change is that Phil play less games every week and upload less videos everyday so that people can catch up. Phil also announced his new segment called Retro Replay in which he will replay a previous game from his early days as a YouTube gamer and post it on his main channel. He has also unblocked everyone in the comments section and will now post all fighting game coverage on his main channel. Finally, DSP announced the creation of a new channel called TheKingOfHateVlogs where Phil’s non-gaming vlog-like segments would be shown. So far, fan reception has been positive to these changes.

Personal Life

Philip Burnell is 30 years old and lives in a condo in Connecticut and currently has a 20 year old girlfriend named Liana who is also a Machinima partnered YouTube gamer and goes by the name of Panda Lee. In many of his videos, Burnell has often discussed about his back problems in which one of his disks is disconnected due to unknown reasons. He states that walking, driving, and doing other normal activities for a long period of time can have a painful impact on his back. DSP states that he would like to move out of Connecticut due to high condo property taxes and would like to afford a surgery to fix his back.

I Threw was my Pen

About

I threw was my pen, also known as ‘You threw was my pen’, is a statement used to convey one’s feeling of when threw was one’s pen. However this is just merely the interpreted view by many, as no one actually knows what it means and so is the feeling of the meme itself which gives it its specialty.

Origin

The original meme was formed on the popular site named 4chan, specifically /b/ on the 24th February, 2013. It was formed when someone posted a thread that he used a spy camera to take pictures of other people. When asked about these certain pictures, he then misinformed the other users saying “I threw was my pen” and so then the meme exploded from there.

Many threads were to be made about it, including hilarious contexts. The meme was originally brought by placing it over other memes, as stated before in hilarious or funny contexts, or just how the meme shouldn’t be in which makes it what it is. It were to be known as the hilarious but bad meme by many, and by others, as not hilarious. Many a laughs were to be gotten that day.

About:
How It Feels To Chew 5 Gum is an image macro series in which a person is portrayed in a disturbing pose or being harmed in some way, overlaid with the caption “how it feels to chew 5 gum,” a sort of antithesis to the euphoric feelings the original 5 gum commercials implied from chewing 5 gum.

Origin:
Ever since it’s introduction in 2007, Wrigley’s 5 gum has been airing a series of commercials with the the phrase “how it feels to chew 5 gum.” Over the years, a number of YouTube videos began parodying the commercials. Here’s one such example:

Some examples also appeared on 4chan, Reddit, Meme Generator, FunnyJunk, and I Can Has Cheezburger, such as this thread on Reddit’s r/4chan forum, where users are seen suggesting disturbing scenarios on how it actually feels to chew 5 gum: http://www.reddit.com/r/4chan/comments/1834ke/how_it_feels_to_chew_5_gum_super_nsfl/

Danbooru (site domain: danbooru.donmai.us or donmai.us)[1] is an online imageboard using a non-hierarchical semantic structure in which users are able to post content and sort this through tags and ratings. There exist numerous different Danbooru-style imageboards, often specialising in a specific subject.

History

According to the WaybackMachine web archive,[2] the first archived instance of Danbooru dates back to February 15th, 2006, with an image amount of 23,871. Although the Facebook page[3] for Danbooru implies they were around as early as May 25th, 2005.

Traffic

Danbooru has an Alexa[4] global rank of 7,777, with a rank of 1,242 in Japan and 6,384 in the US. Danbooru also has a Quantquast[5] rank of 15,893. According to Quantquast’s demographics, the user base is 59% male and 41% female with the majority being below the age of 24.

Danbooru reached its 100,000th upload on January 19th, 2007, and it’s 1,000,000th on September 20th, 2011. As of February 26th, 2012, the site contains over 1,36 million images.

Features

Tagging System

Danbooru and other image boorus often make us of a tagging system in which users sort the images into categories (shown below) while uploading. These main focus of these categories is to divide images by the show they’re from, the characters showing, and the artist, but can go as deep as specific details present in the images such as clothing or facial expressions. Image boorus contain pools where certain images that are related to each other in a way that the tag system doesn’t allow for can be collected for viewing, and is the primary means for works hosted on the boorus to be compiled.

Another notable tagging feature is the dividing of images through rating based on whether they’re safe, questionable or explicit. The rating is commonly decided by the inclusion of erotica or intercourse, but can also be decided through subjects such as gore. Certain image boorus specialize only in a certain rating, in which the rating system is properly adjusted to match the site’s function.

Overview

The Onion’s Quvenzhané Wallis Controversy refers to the fallout regarding a tweet published on the official Twitter account for the satirical news organization The Onion, which called the American child actress Quvenzhané Wallis a “cunt.”

Background

On February, 24 2013, during the Academy Awards, the official twitter account for The Onion made a controversial tweet about Academy Award nominee, Quvenzhane Wallis (shown below).

Notable Developments

Negative reaction to the tweet spread quickly on various sites online. Within one hour, the offending tweet was deleted.

The Onion Apologizes

The morning after the incident, The Onion CEO Steve Hannah issued an official apology on The Onion’s Tumblr blog.[1]

Dear Readers,

On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive--not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting.

No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire.

The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication. We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again.

In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.

Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry.

Sincerely,

Steve Hannah

Move Faster Pokey!

How it all began

Sometime in 2007, a group of goons from Something Awful decided to tackle a gamecalledKaizo Mario World.[1] This group of goons consisted of three people – Proton Jon, Psychedelic Eyeball, and Wugga – and they decided to take turns playing through the stages. They suffered greatly, and their fellow goons were greatly amused. Eventually, Proton Jon’s turn to play Special Stage 2 came up… and when the video reached YouTube, he was catapulted to stardom.

Kaizo Mario World itself (the name literally meaning “Hacked Mario World”) was designed by an unknown Japanese gamer and ROM-hack designer with the intent of challenging a friend of his to complete the hellishly difficult levels.[2] Ironically, it was ProtonJon and his team’s hilarious videos which brought Kaizo Mario World into the limelight; without the Something Awful goons, the hack probably would have served its purpose and then languished in obscurity. Before long, ludicrous difficulty and completelyunfair level design became a huge fad among Super Mario World hack designers, and dozens of people were playing Kaizo Mario World and other hacks (many of which put up videos of their own; indeed, it would not be an understatement to say that Proton Jon was the driving influence behind the Let’s Play phenomenon gaining a foothold on YouTube).[3] The “Move faster Pokey” moment in particular received numerous spinoffs, including Sparta remixes and more custom levels involving using Mario’s spin jump (or similar techniques) to have Pokeys or similar enemies carry the player across hazards.

Spin-offs

Proton Jon’s reaction

In the wake of the original video series’ success, Proton Jon went on to play numerous other Super Mario World hacks, many of them sent in by his ever-growing fanbase.[3] Many of these fanhacks were outrageously difficult, much in the same vein as Kaizo Mario World (which found itself being a huge inspiration to game modders once Proton Jon and his team brought it into the limelight). However, Proton Jon gradually grew weary of the constant barrage of invisible blocks, end-of-level death traps, and other completely unfair tricks he was faced with in fan-submitted (and frequently fan-designed) hacks, and eventually decided to put playthroughs of Super Mario World hacks on indefinite hiatus to focus on other Let’s Plays (including those with his new LP team, the Runaway Guys).[3]

Today, Proton Jon finds the “Move Faster Pokey!” meme to be tired and irksome, and dislikes it being brought up.[3] Needless to say, this spurs people who he collaborates with (most notably Chuggaaconroy, fellow member of the Runaway Guys) to bring it up on a regular basis, much to his chagrin (and his viewers’ amusement).

Related Memes

“Move faster Pokey!” is by far the most famous quote from ProtonJon’s playthrough of Kaizo Mario World, but it isn’t his only quote from the playthrough of Special Stage 2 (let alone the entire game) to have become memetic. Other prominent lines include:

“100 seconds?!?”: The reaction to entering Special Stage 2 and finding out that it has an obscenely short time limit, forcing the player to go through the entire series of obstacles – including the Pokey moving across the pit – in less than, well, 100 seconds.

About

My Eyes Are Up Here is a catchphrase criticizing the stereotype that men will often stare at a woman’s breasts while talking to her. Online, It is commonly found usd in the context of female characters who wear costumes or outfits involving large sections of exposed skin, like DC Comic’s Power Girl. It can also be used in the context of a male-identifying person who wants to detract attention from his body.

Origin

While the phrase was used as early as 1996 in newspapers[4] describing events that took place during an MTV dating game show, some of the earliest conversation about the phrase in an online forum took place in 2005 on the BodyBuilding.com message boards. In a thread[5] posted on January 28th, 2005 in the relationship help subforum, a male is seeking help after noticing many people have been staring at his large penis through his clothes. Though it is unclear whether or not the OP was just being sarcastic, many commenters took his post seriously and offered tips on how to minimize the appearance of his penis through clothing.

Stepping up the cringe / The Brutal Brony

About

“Stepping up the cringe” or “The Brutal Brony” is a two panel image macro showing the transformation of a metal-head into a brony.

Origin

On April 13, 2012, a reddit user, bfgmovies, uploaded an image of himself poking fun at his transformation from a hardcore metal-head and weapons specialist into a pony loving brony. [1] The image was posted on the My Little Pony subreddit, and got a total of 705 karma points.

Spread

In early 2013, the image was seen floating around on 4chan which made it’s way to the Google image search engine. This is when reddit user Pineo found the image and uploaded it to the cringepics subreddit on Febuary 20, 2013[2]. The post made it’s way to the front page, with a total of 2011 karma points and was subsequently seen by the original poser, bfgmovies. Bfgmovies made an appearance in the comments, and was warmly welcomed by the cringpics redditors after he explained the image and the meaning behind the image. The redditors began tagging bfgmovies with different names, till the name “Brutal Brony” was decided on, and the mods flaired him as such. Much criticism was given to bfgmovies for his lack of trigger discipline and poor handling of the firearm since bfgmovies worked as a gunsmith. To these comments he replied “I wanted to create a certain image when taking the pic, so to create the image of a guy who thinks he’s some badass metal-head, but really isn’t, I knew it would help if he had his finger on the trigger. I am very safe with my firearms and i know how to properly treat and hold them and i still took all the necessary precautions when taking the pic. I had the firing pin out and other random parts out, i took the pic after i had an idea while cleaning my gun. It was purposely done for the sake of effect and image”[3].
The image started making more appearances on 4chan’s /mlp/ and /b/ boards, and made it’s way to the fan administrated 4chan facebook page, which further spread it’s usage.[4]
