About

Suburban Hardass is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photograph of a boy wearing an open button-down shirt over an exposed white tank top. The captions typically portray the character as a privileged teenager attempting to emulate various urban stereotypes.

Origin

On October 23rd, 2010, the photo blog People WTF[3] published a post titled “A Wigger Kid With His Self-Timer Camera Killing Time”, which highlighted two photographs of a teenage boy posing in front of the camera (shown below).

On June 24th, 2012, Redditor huisme submitted an image macro to the /r/AdviceAnimals[2] with the caption “‘I run this fucking town!’ / Grounded for swearing”, which reached the front page receiving over 6,400 up votes and 75 comments within one month.

Precursors

The Suburban Hardass character bears many similarities to other wannabe “gangster” stereotype memes, which often involve young males attempting to appear cavalier and intimidating. These characteristics can be found in the Scumbag Steve advice animal (shown below, left), featuring captions related to unethical and hedonistic behaviors, and the Internet Tough Guy pejorative term, which is used to describe boastful and aggressive internet commenters (shown below, right).

In addition, the series contains many elements pertaining to a coming-of-age identity crisis associated with privileged youth. This theme is also present in the Idiot Nerd Girl (shown below, left), portraying a teenage girl pretending to be a nerd, and the College Liberal advice animal (shown below, right), which showcases stereotypes associated with naive and hypocritical left-wing university students.

Spread

On July 12th, 2012, @SuburbanHardasz[10] Twitter account and the “Suburban Hardass” Facebook[5] page were created. On August 14th, Redditor arandomwhiteguy37 submitted an image macro with the caption “’I had to go off the grid for awhile” / Was grounded for the last month" (shown below) in a post to the /r/AdviceAnimals[8] subreddit, receiving over 9,000 up votes and 160 comments within 24 hours.

On June 28th, the Tumblr blog Runt of the Web[9] highlighted several notable examples from the series in a post titled “Suburban Hardass Meme.” The meme has continued to spread on Tumblr under the tag “#suburban hardass.”[7] As of August 15th, 2012, the Suburban Hardass Quickmeme[1] page has accumulated over 950 submissions.

About

Plopper, mostly known as Spider-Pig and Harry Plopper, is the name of the fictional animated pig known from the 2007 film “The Simpsons Movie”, the film version of the popular animated TV series The Simpsons .

Origin

The pig named Plopper first appeared in a trailer from the successful 2007 film “The Simpsons Movie” before internationally airing it in cinemas on July 26, 2007. It’s first appearence was in the fictional fast food restaurant Krusty Burger, when Krusty, the clown, featured the pig in a TV commercial for his new burger named The Clogger and decided to kill it after completing the commercial. Homer became upset and immediately adopted him but later spends more time with the pig than with his son Bart.

Plopper is voiced by the voice actress “Tress MacNeille”, who also voiced for characters such as Linda, Mom and Hattie McDoogal from another popular animated TV series Futurama .

Spider-Pig

“Spider-Pig. Spider-Pig. Does whatever a Spider-Pig does. Can he swing, from a web? No he can’t, he’s a pig. Look out! He is a Spider-Pig!”

In a scene, where Homer began his epiphany and held Plopper on the ceiling, he began singing a parody of the Spider-Man Theme Song pretending the pig to be Spider-Ham / Peter Porker, the 1983 anthropomorphic funny animal parody Marvel character of Spider-Man . This scene is one of the most memorable moments from the film according to the fans and the pig has been realized mostly as Spider-Pig by proving it through fan-art.

Spider-Pig Theme Song

The short parody song was favoured by the fans the most and many users began making their remixes including Homer Simpson’s voice. Fans desired and requested the creators to make a full song of the short appearence of the Spider-Man Theme Song parody sang by Homer. The desire has been accomplished by releasing a Soundtrack album for the film on July 24, 2007 by Adrenaline Music Group. All the tracks are composed by german music producer and film composer Hans Zimmer and the “Spider Pig” song from the album charted in several countries, reaching number eight on New Zealand’s Top 40 Singles Chart, fourteen on Norway’s VG-lista, twenty-three on the UK Singles Chart and fifty-three on the Swedish Singles Chart.

Harry Plopper

After Marge told Homer to dispose of the waste properly, and said that he could take Spider-Pig with him, Homer corrected her and told her that he renamed Spider-Pig to Harry Plopper, which is a spoof of Harry Potter . This also inspired fan-arts.

They took our jobs!

“They took our jobs” was made famous by the popular TV show Southpark, with over 2 millon views on a compilation video on Youtube.

In the episode, immigrants from the future who are redundant/jobless come to South Park, Collorado to find work for very little money. They rapidly take people’s jobs, and finally they are found on every corner in every restaurant , in every supermarket etc. This angers right wing politicians or what is commonly referred to as “rednecks”. At a meeting to discuss their concern with the immigrants, construction worker Darryl Weathers complains that they have worked hard to get their pay high enough to make a living, but now are being ousted by the immigrants. The other workers voice their own complaints, with each sentence finishing off with an increasingly slurred exclamation of “They took our jobs!” (“Dey turk err jurbs,” “Durker durr,” etc
They’re solution was to make everyone “gayer so the future won’t exist”. This causes everyone stripping and engaging in an orgy. Slowly, the people who were redundant begin to add to this , which causes the immigrants to dissapear.

Now, the phrase is assosiated with any rednecks who looks like Darryl Weathers, for example

Many of the comments are slurred versions of “they took our jobs”, this is aimed at the “dad” who looks exceptionally like Darryl

About

Wizard Obama is an image series that uses a picture of President Barak Obama to imply that the president has magical powers. This is because the picture used features a stage light behind the president that gives the look of him holding a crystal ball or creating an orb of energy.

Origin

[researching]

On August 13, 2012, President Obama stopped in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to talk to voters about his campaign. As he was speaking, photographer Carolyn Kaster of the Associated Press took a picture of him with his hands in front of him. Her angle combined with the president’s gesture created an image that looked as if the stage light behind the president, shining directly at the camera, were instead a bright orb in the president’s hands.

Edits began to appear, making references to franchises like Harry Potter, Street Fighter, and Lord of the Rings.

About

“Kill it before it lays eggs!” is a popular catchphrase used to playfully express disgust and repulse often used in image macros.

Origin
The origin of this meme is unknown, but it’s was around for a long time, no one really knows where and when the cartchphrase was first used but it’s safe to say it is most likely originated from the 80’s when there was a large wave of alien horror movies in which the cretures typically were abled to quickly multiply by laying eggs.

Usage

The meme is ofren used in reaction to someone/something disgusting and scary, and also in image macros, typically, also, in pictures of something repulsive or scary or plain wierd jokingly implying that the picture is inhuman. it’s usage is quite similar to “this is not even my final form!” image macro.

This meme however, is rather different from the ‘Kill it with fire!’ because the latter usually is expressed a a negative phenomenon, a bad group, and usually used to express hatered, unlike this meme which is focused more around humerous repulse and disgust.

Todd Akin's Sexual Assault Gaffe

$
0
0

Background

On August 19th, 2012, the United States Representative for Missouri’s 2nd congressional district Republican William Todd Akin was interviewed by the St. Louis television station KTVI-TV during his campaign for a seat in the U.S. Senate. During the interview, Akin was questioned about his position on abortion in cases where the woman was impregnated due to sexual assault, to which Akin replied that he believe the female body is able to prevent itself from being impregnated in cases of “legitimate rape.”

“Well you know, people always want to try to make that as one of those things, well how do you, how do you slice this particularly tough sort of ethical question. First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”[1]

Akin’s statements were immediately met with criticism about the insensitive and inaccurate views on sexual assault. In a statement to the Fox 2[1] news television station, Akin’s opponent Senator Claire McCaskill (D, Missouri) was quoting saying, “It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape."

Notable Developments

Media Coverage

The same day Akin was interviewed, the story was immediately picked up by news media including Forbes[2], The New York Times[4] and The Guardian.[11] On August 20th, the controversy was reported by Fox News[12], The Huffington Post[13], CBS[14], The Wall Street Journal[15], ABC News[16] and CNN.[17] The same day, the satirical news publication The Onion posted an article titled “Pregnant Woman Relieved to Learn Her Rape Was Illegitimate”, which mocked Akin’s statements with a fictional account of a woman who is happy to discover that she was not actually sexually assaulted since she became pregnant afterwards. The same day, The Onion[7] published another article parodying Akin’s apology titled “I Misspoke -- What I meant to Say is ’I Am Dumb As Dog Shit and I am a Terrible Human Being.”

Akin’s Response

On August 20th, 2012, Akin defended himself by saying he “misspoke” during the interview, and apologized for the poor choice of words.

Obama’s Response

On August 20th, United States President Barack Obama condemned Akin’s remarks during a White House press conference, saying “rape is rape” and that “the views expressed were offensive.”

GOP Pulls Funding

On August 20th, The Washington Post[6] reported that the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) ruled that the national GOP will pull funding from Akin’s Senate campaign as a consequence of the controversial statements the congressman made regarding female sexual assault. The article went on to report that NRSC chairman John Cornyn warmed Akin that he was potentially harming the ability of Republicans retaking majority in the Senate.

Online Reaction

On August 19th, Redditor are_politics_funny submitted a video of the KTVI Akin interview to the /r/politics[10] subreddit titled “Todd Akin, GOP candidate for US Senate seat from Missouri, justifying his position on abortion.” Within 24 hours, the post received over 1,450 up votes and 230 comments. On August 20th, stand up comedian Phoebe Robinson wrote a post on her personal blog Blaria[8] titled “If You Are a Woman & Still Vote Republican, You’re a Moron”, which featured criticism of Akin’s statements paried with humorous animated GIFs.

The same day, the Internet humor blog Jest[9] published a post titled "Sex Education According to Todd Akin, which featured mock human anatomy text book pages parodying the congressman’s statements regarding sexual assault and pregnancy.

On Tumblr

On August 20th, 2012, the “Talking to Doctors” Tumblr blog was launched, which featured image macros with a superimposed photo of Todd Akin on various source images accompanied by captions with the snowclone “It seems to me first of all, from talking to doctors, if it’s a legitimate X, then Y has ways to try to shut the whole thing down.” The first instance posted on the blog featured a screen capture of the Death Star space station from the science fiction film series Star Wars with the caption “It seems to me first of all, from talking to doctors, if it’s a legitimate death star, then Alderon has ways to try to shut that whole thing down” (shown below, left).

The same day, the women’s interest blog Jezebel[19] linked to the blog in an article titled “Other Things Todd Akin Learned ‘From Talking to Doctors’.” On August 21st, the Internet culture news blog UpRoxx published a post titled “What Else Did Todd Akin Learn ‘From Talking to Doctors’?”, highlighting several notable examples from the Tumblr blog. The same day, the Discovery[20] channel published a blog post titled “Akin’s Rape Comments Goes Meme.”

On Twitter

On August 20th, Akin canceled plans to appear on the CNN talk show “Piers Morgan Tonight”, which prompted host Piers Morgan to film an empty chair during the show and refer to Akin as a “gutless little twerp.” The same day, the @AkinEmptyChair Twitter account was created, parodying the Piers Morgan stunt and tweeting criticisms toward Akin.
