About

Calne Ca (Japanese: 骸音シーエ)[1] is an officially reconsigned Vocaloid“Subspecies[2] created by 3D CG artist and sculptor Kotaro Maeda (前田幸太郎) also known as Deino.[3][4][5][6][7][8] She is essentially a robotic female skeleton named Calcium (シーエ)[9] cosplaying Hatsune Miku.[10] She has interchangeable parts and here “skin” is a casing that as much a part of the cosplay as her clothing so her appearance can vary from skeletal, to cybernetic (her most common appearance), to insectoid, to human. She almost always has a stylized Isopoda (either a Ligia oceanica[11] or a Ligia exotica[12]) named Sodium Sulfite (ナトくん)[11] living on top of her head.

She is of May 2013 the face for the Nightmare Fuel subsection of the Vocaloid entry on TV Tropes.[13]

Origin

The first illustration to feature Calne Ca was uploaded to pixiv on March 15th, 2009[14] previewing a model Deino was working on for an upcoming music video.

The music video was uploaded to Deino’s Nico Nico Douga (NND) account on July 2nd, 2009[15]; it was for the song “Machine Muzik” by Ding Saya (鼎沙耶).[16]

A day later a music video with only a few illustrations and some limited animation was released for “Corpse Attack!” by Utsu-P (鬱P) on Utsu-P’s NND channel.[17]

Further Works

Deino continued to periodically provide illustrations often featuring Calne Ca (or Calcium as other Vocaloids or Utauloids) for various songs and album covers. The most regular series of collaborations seems to be with Sime-Saba Twister (シメサバツイスターズ) creating the cover illustrations for several of Sime-Saba Twister’s albums.[18][19][20]

In March of 2010 Deino along with his friend Hinoi released a lower polygon model of Calne Ca for Miku Miku Dance. The MMD model has been periodically updated.[21][22]

Two additional full music video featuring Calne Ca have been created:

“Nehanshika” (ネハンシカ) by Nehanshika-P[23](August 10th, 2010)[24]

“Bacterial Contamination” (細菌汚染) by Kanimiso-P (カニミソP) a.k.a. mathru[25] (February 12th, 2012)[26]

Spread

As of May 2013 there are over 1300 results with the “骸音シーエ” tag on pixiv; the majority of the work were uploaded after the release of “Bacterial Contamination”.[27]

Official Recognition

On January 21st, 2011 Sega announced that Calne Ca would be one of the characters featured in Project Diva Aracade skins.[28][29]

An animation of Calne Ca was among the videos shown during a mural painting by Doppel as part of the Snow Miku for Sapporo 2011 event held on February 21st, 2011.[30]

The card “Broken Virus” for the virtual card Alteil was included as part of a Hatsune Miku event held in October of 2011.[31][32]

About

The Attack on Titan Photo Fad (Japanese: 進撃の巨人ごっこ, Shingeki no Koyjin Gokko; lit. The Attack on Titan Game), refers to a photo fad of forced perspective images getting inspiration from the Japanese TV anime series Attack on Titan.

In the spring of 2013, many young Japanese Twitter users had participated onto this as a following photo fad of Hadoukening.

Origin

The first instance of this fad was posted by Twitter user おーきぽょ (@2525_1919)[1] on April 27th, 2013[2], which depicted a young male jumping in the air, appearing as if he was about to jump on to the back of the person in the foreground. This tweet had earned over 4,800 retweets and 2,000 favs in its first month.

Spread

On May 9th, more of these pictures began to surface on the microblogging site, resulting in it becoming a trending topic.[3] Some of those images also utilized an official smartphone app of Attack on Titan which decorates user photos by the original illustrations.

On May 10th, compilations of these staged photographs where posted on Korean site Inven[4] and Japanese online news site ITmedia.[5] The photos made their way to the English-speaking web that afternoon, where they were shared in a NeoGAF[6] thread about the show. Approximately 90 minutes later, a photo collection was featured on Japanese culture fansite Crunchyroll.[7] A popular American entertainment website IGN also reported this phenomena in their video news on May 16th.[8]

On May 27th, this internet fad was reported in a morning TV news show by the Japanese mainstream media.

About

Occupygezi (aka. Taksim Gezi Park Protests) is the protests which is still proceed in Turkey by anti-goverment organizations and political parties against the Islam partizan goverment.

Spreading Of Occupy

At first in 28 May 2013 the initial Istanbul protests were only led by about 50 environmentalists against replacing Taksim Gezi Park with a reconstruction of the historic Taksim Military Barracks , with the possibility of housing a shopping mall.[1] During the protests Turkish police used violently force and this caused the simple protest into a country-wide riot.

Summary Of Event

After the attack of the Turkish Police(with high pressure water, tear gaz and even with the Agent Orange*); protesters used Twitter hashtags and facebook shares to call people over the protest. Police forces violently tried to prevent the protest against the mall. The violent actions of Turkish Police attracted more protestans. Then the protest turned into a hatred against the goverment and the protest turned into a riot.

After the huge amound groups of protestors have been accumilated in Taksim Gezi Park, police forces cannot prevented almost one million protestants and falled back.

After the succeed in Taksim, protest spread around the country. In all district, Taksim protest has been supported by the other protests and fascist groups.

Goverment’s Manner

Noted by the foreign media, Turkish media coveraged a little about the protest. Turkish Telecommunication also tried to censor social media and networks.

PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan dismissed the protest in all around the country and called the protesters “bunch of looters”.

From Reddit[7]

The inflammatory speeches of the PM have caused quite an interesting change of mind in a bunch of his former supporters who have seen their relatives, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters hurt by the police brutality. They now back up the youths, I don’t know if he’s really stupid or too confident in his power but it certainly is not going as expected for him. The demonstrations are now all over the country.

Support from Anonymous

Spread In World-wide

BBC[5], Aljazeera[6], Guardian[7] mentioned this news in first pages. Turkish hashtags against the project and the turkish goverment became the most discussed hashtags on twitter. On Reddit[4] the crime against the humanity has been frontpaged. Few 4chan threads have been opened on /b/ or /pol/.

About

Fate/stay night is a Japanese visual novel developed by Type-Moon,[1] which was originally released as an adult game for Windows on January 30, 2004. While never officially released in English, a fan translation was made by mirror moon for free.[2] The game is about Shirou Emiya, a high school student who unwittingly enters a to-the-death tournament called The Fifth Holy Grail War, where combatants fight with magic and heroes throughout history for a chance to have their wishes granted by the Holy Grail. He must defeat the other six combatants in order to win.

Memes

People Die If They Are Killed

People Die If They Are Killed is a meme originating from episode 23 of the anime adaption when Shirou is overcome by emotion and says, “People die if they are killed.” to his Servant, Saber. In actuality, the phrase itself comes from a play on an idiom that describes incredibly tough people who “won’t die if they’re killed”.

Jam It In!

Jam It In is an exploitable phrase (Along with VagOOO and POnOS) originating from an awkwardly-translated hentai doujin in which Saber asks Shirou to restore her magic by telling him to “please put your… that! y…your pOnOs! to my… my… here! my vagOOO!!! and j… j… JAM IT IN!” Shriou’s reply of, “You lost me…” has also reached memetic status, due to the situations in which it can be used to respond to a sexual innuendo.

Sakurafish

Sakurafish/Every Day Until You Like It is a daily dose type image mainly posted on 4chan’s /a/ (anime & manga) and /jp/ (otaku culture) boards. It shows one of the main heroines, Sakura, forcefully biting into a fish, with the idea being that posting them on such a regular basis will lead to even those that initially hate it to grow used to it and like it. Due to this, threads featuring Sakurafish are commonly accompanied with the text “I’m going to post this every day until you like it.” Although initially seen as widespread trolling in 2007 and 2008, through 2009 and later opinions about Sakurafish became more positive, resulting in the image seeing frequent usage in photoshops.

GAR

GAR is an anime-related term that is associated with “manly” and “badass” characters. Though once a popular and widely-used slang, in recent years its usage has died down. The term is more or less inspired by the character Archer. It originated from an /a/nonymous user who meant to post “I am Gay for Archer” accidentally posted “I am Gar for Archer”. The typo quickly caught on in popularity and was widely used on /a/ and other anime-related internet forums. The term also became popular on /m/ (Mecha board) due to the popularity of the series GaoGaiGar.

Unlimited Blade Works

Unlimited Blade Works is a copypasta parodying the incantation of the character Archer. Variations of it of it regularly appear on /a/ and among Fate Stay/Night topics across the internet. Originating from the Unlimited Blade Works route of the story, the character Archer is shown to have an ability to summon a Reality Marble (a space of altered reality). In this space he is granted unlimited access to copies of famous legendary swords. To summon this, he does the following incantation-
“I am the Bone of my Sword
Steel is my Body and Fire is my Blood.
I have created over a Thousand Blades,
Unknown to Death,
Nor known to Life.
Have withstood Pain to create many Weapons
Yet those Hands will never hold Anything.
So, as I Pray--
Unlimited Blade Works

About

Prancercise is an exercise developed by Florida resident Joanna Rohrback that involves dancing in a similar fashion to a horse’s gait.[5] The regimen gained notoriety when a demonstration video began circulating online in May of 2013.

Origin

On December 12th, 2012, the Prancercise YouTube channel uploaded a video titled “Prancercise: A Fitness Workout,” which featured Rohrback performing various dance moves while walking down a pathway in a park. As of June 2013, the video has received over five million views and 200 comments.

Spread

The video remained relatively obscure until May 25th, 2013, when it was posted to the /r/videos[1] subreddit. On May 28th, the video was highlighted on the viral content site BuzzFeed,[2] where it received over 38,700 views and 6,500 Facebook likes in the first six days. On the following day, Redditor jhangel77 reposted the video to the /r/cringe[10] subreddit. Also on May 29th, the Seattle-based novelty store Archie McPhee uploaded a video to YouTube featuring a man Prancercising while wearing a unicorn-themed horse head mask (shown below). In the following five days, the video accumulated upwards of 73,000 views and 100 comments.

On May 30th, The Week[4] published an article about the exercise, revealing that Rohrback invented the regimen back in 1989. That same day, CNBC[6] published an interview with Rohrback, who responded to those making fun of her video saying, “Let them laugh.” Also on May 30th, The Daily Beast[8] published another interview with Rohrback in which she explained that she invented the exercise while walking down the street in the late 1980s.

“I must have heard a really good song I liked on the radio. I started moving in a rhythmic way, using ankle weights. And it just evolved.”

On May 31st, Time Magazine[3] highlighted the video on their Newsfeed blog. On the following day, Rohrback appeared on Inside Edition to promote and demonstrate her exercise (shown below). Also on June 1st, ABC News[9] published an article comparing Prancercise to other bizarre workouts, including “treadmill dancing” and the “heel hop workout.”

About

Ratboy Genius is a character created by Ryan Dorin in 2007. The digitally created human-like creature is depicted with oversized rat ears and a human body. The character is used in a number of different video series on Dorin’s personal homepage[1] and YouTube channel.[2]

Origin

The first Ratboy Genius video was uploaded to YouTube on July 23rd, 2007. The video was the first chapter in the Ratboy Kingdom series, describing the absurd events of the character’s every day life. The video places the animated characters over on scenic photographs, depicting Ratboy Genius turning into a fish and going for a swim. As of June 2013, the video has more than 14,000 views.

Spread

As the series progressed, Ratboy Genius evolved in to a 3D animation and by October 2007, the series began to incorporate animated scenery elements as well as music sung by the character (shown below, left). In 2009, Dorin began a blog for Ratboy Genius[3] to accompany the video series. The character began seeing attention outside of YouTube in 2010, when a thread about the Happyman series (shown below, right) was posted on the Tip of the Hat forums[4] that September. The same month, a "Facebook:/memes/facebook fan page[9] for the character was created, gaining 680 likes as of June 2013. The first mention of Ratboy Genius on 4chan appeared that November in a thread on /tv/ (Television and Film).[16] In December 2010, an in-character Ratboy Genius Twitter account[8] was created.

In August 2011, fan art of the character began to appear on Newgrounds.[5] In September 2011, additional fan art began to appear on deviantART[6] and another discussion thread was posted on the Bungie forums.[7] In January 2012, Ratboy Genius appeared in a screenshot from Left 4 Dead 2 posted to the Steam Community.[10] In October 2012, the subreddit /r/RatboyGenius[11] launched, accruing 24 readers as of June 2013. In February 2013, one of the Happyman episodes was submitted to /r/Cringe[12], pointing out its “terrible CGI” and “nightmarish voice filters.” The video gained 387 upvotes, 302 points overall and 92 comments. The following month, the first single topic Tumblr blog dedicated to Ratboy Genius[13] launched, averaging 75 posts per month. Throughout 2013, the fandom grew on Tumblr resulting in an anonymous confession blog[14] and an ask blog[15] dedicated to the character. Michael Douglas' Cunnilingus Remark

$
0
0

Background

On June 3rd, 2013, The Guardian[1] published an exclusive interview article with Academy Award winning actor Michael Douglas, who revealed quite a few details about his marriage to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, his role in the 2013 American drama film Behind the Candelabra and the ongoing battle with throat cancer. When asked if he believed his heavy drinking and smoking habits had something to do with it, Douglas responded by identifying cunnilingus as the possible cause of contracting the sexually transmitted carcinogen HPV [human papillomavirus].

“No,” he says. “No. Because, without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus.”

Notable Developments

News Media Coverage

Immediately after The Guardian’s publication of the interview, several celebrity gossip news sites and blogs including BuzzFeed[3], TMZ[4], Salon[6], The Atlantic[7], Huffington Post[8] and Jezebel[10] picked up on Douglas’ assertion with attention-grabbing headlines like “Michael Douglas: Oral Sex Gave Me Cancer” and “Michael Douglas: Oral Sex Can Cause Cancer” among other variations.

On Twitter

Many influential Twitter users in the entertainment business promptly reacted to the headlines with punchlines and commentaries on cunnilingus and HPV, including the creator of HBO series Girls Lena Dunham as well as comedians Julie Klausner and Michael Ian Black.

Inevitably, mentions of both terms on Twitter surged in the following 24 hours, both of which became trending topics on the microblogging site. Between June 1st and June 3rd, mentions of “cunnilingus” shot up from a few hundreds per day to more than 10,000, according to the Twitter analytics service Topsy.[13]

Publicist’s Response

Within hours of the story going viral, the actor’s publicist Allen Burry addressed the story by telling the Hollywood news site TheWrap[16] that Douglas never said cunnilingus is what directly caused his illness, but rather brought it up as a possible cause of oral cancer in general. Despite asserting that his statement was misinterpreted, Burry added that he was not seeking a formal correction from The Guardian or other news outlets that ran stories about his client.

Medical Opinions

Meanwhile, several mainstream news outlets and medical reference sites like CNN[15] and WebMD[16] followed up with articles examining the scientific basis of Douglas’ claim and providing background information on the current state of HPV virus. While most news publications cautiously acknowledged that a growing majority of oral cancer cases are caused by HPV, which has recently replaced tobacco as the leading cause of throat cancer, medical experts like Kent Sepkowitz[5] conveyed skepticism as to a direct link between the act of cunnilingus with contracting HPV infection.

“The story, like so much that touches the silver screen, is just close enough to a truth to grab a headline and just far enough away to drive experts insane.”

Super Mario 64 Creepypasta

The Pasta

I always liked Super Mario 64 when I was a kid. I remember playing it at my aunt’s house all the time. Well, one day a pop-up appeared out of nowhere as I was watching gameplay footage on YouTube. I was a little startled, and was about to close the window, until I realized that it was a website showing of a mint condition copy of Super Mario 64 for sale. There was a picture and everything. I usually don’t trust these things, but the feeling of nostalgia overpowered me, and I wanted to buy it.

The whole business was peculiar, seeing as how the owner of the game wanted the buyer to send an envelope containing $10 to and address on the site, instead of using something like PayPal. What made things even more strange was that when I tried to gain access to the website (I wrote down the URL) after encountering…problems with the game, the page was nowhere to be found.

A few days after the $10 was mailed, I got a package containing the new copy of the game. The first thing I noticed when I opened the small box was that the “official sticker” with Mario flying in the air was apparently peeled off or something. In it’s place was a piece of duct tape with “Mario” crudely written on it in permanent marker. I felt a little ripped-off, but as long as the game worked, I didn’t care.

I got out my Nintendo 64 and put the cartridge in. The screen turned on with the familiar Mario face that you could stretch and twist aimlessly. I remembered laughing all the time at the results as a kid and decided to mess around for old times sake. I moved the cursor over to Mario’s ear and pulled it to elven proportions. I was going to do the same to the other ear, when the TV suddenly produced loud static. Mario’s whole head started deforming and twisting in ways that I didn’t even know were possible for the model. Random sound effects from the game started playing along with the static. As all this was occurring, I could hear a faint voice whispering in Japanese. The voice was stammering and whimpering.

I immediately shut off the game and tried again. I didn’t bother with the Mario head this time. Just selected a new file and started playing.

When I selected the file, the game skipped the opening monologue by Peach and the courtyard outside. Mario was just placed right inside the castle. Creepier still, Bowser didn’t say anything either. I tried to ignore it and played anyway. However I also noticed that their was no music. Just dead silence. There weren’t even any Toads around to talk to. The only door I could enter was the Bob-omb Battlefield. The other doors wouldn’t even respond to my button commands.

The portrait to Bob-omb Battlefield wasn’t the usual picture. It was just a stark white canvas. I was still trying to convince myself that these were just minor glitches, and that they wouldn’t effect the gameplay at all. Once I entered the portrait, the image suddenly went from a blank canvas to the Lethal Lava Land painting. You know, that slightly unsettling image of the flame with the evil smile? Yeah, that’s when I started getting really suspicious.

The mission select menu came up, and yet another weird detail was present. Instead of “Big Bob-omb on the Summit”, the mission was called “TURNBACK”. I have no idea what drove me to press A, but I did.

The level seemed normal. Everything was how I remembered it. I thought I could finally enjoy my favorite childhood game. But then I saw him. Luigi. I was absolutely shocked. He was never in this game. His model wasn’t even a Mario palette swap. He looked like a completely original model. Luigi just stood there until I tried to approach him. He started running at unexpected speeds. I followed suit and went through the level. Strange things happened as I pursued him. Each time I picked up a coin, the enemies and music would get slower, and the scenery would look darker in color and more morbid. It kept gradually getting worse until I collected a 5th coin. Then, the music just stopped. The enemies laid down on the ground like they were dead. I was seriously freaked out, but I kept chasing Luigi.

I went up the hill. No cannon balls rolled down trying to knock me over. I really wasn’t surprised at this point. Luigi was always just out of my sight as I ran. Once I reached the summit, I saw yet another object out of place. A small cottage was all that was seen on the top of the hill. Luigi was nowhere to be found. The cottage was certainly odd-looking for a Mario game. It was old, plain, and broken down. Regardless of my fears at that moment, I had Mario enter the cottage.

As soon as the door closed. A disturbing picture of a hanged Luigi immediately popped up along with a very frightening scare chord. It sounded like a violin screech accompanied by loud piano banging. Mario fell to his knees and sobbed for roughly 5 minutes, then the screen irised-out.

I returned to the castle. Mario just slumped out of the painting. The image switched from the Lethal Lava Land portrait to the image of Luigi hanging himself. The room was different this time. It was now a small hallway. Toads with blank expressions and white robes lined the sides of the hallway. There was another painting at the opposite end that just completely and utterly scared me. It was a picture of my family It wasn’t even a photo from the time Super Mario 64 was released. It was a very, very recent photo. I remembered posing for it last weekend.

I reached for the on/off switch on the N64. There was no way I was going to play this anymore. However, when I flipped the switch, the game was still on. I flipped it back and forth, but to no avail. I tried unplugging the whole system, but it never left the screen. I was even still able to control Mario. I couldn’t just leave it on forever…so I kept playing. I went to the photo of my family, and jumped in. Only one mission was available, of course. This one was called “Run, Don’t Walk”. I selected the mission. ’Let’s-a-go’…

The level started in a flooded hallway with platforms floating on the water. Mario landed on one of these, and the camera turned to show what was behind. A silent black void was slowly approaching Mario. It didn’t look like anything. It didn’t even look like finished graphics. Just a giant, blocky, black blob. I started jumping from platform to platform. With no goal in sight, I kept running, the darkness slowly but surely gaining speed. This kept going on for what felt like hours. I was really doubting there would ever be an end. Mario was just going in circles. Finally, the black blob/void/thing caught up with Mario, and enveloped him in darkness. He didn’t scream or resist at all. It just consumed him.

Mario fell out of the painting and back into the castle. I lost one of my 3 lives. The room was different now. Some of the Toads were gone, and the painting looked different. My family and I were in the same positions, but our bodies were partially decomposed. It looked too real to be Photoshopped. It looked more like someone just took our dead bodies and posed them.

Regardless, I jumped into the painting again. Mario was in a small room. There was still only one mission available. It was called “I’m right here.” spelled just like that. I selected the mission and prepared for the worst. Mario landed in a small, dark room. There no visible way out. The room was empty except for a piano in the corner. I knew what that meant. I was stuck in there with the Mad Piano. I approached it and it started chasing me as always. There was no way to damage it, so I had no choice but to let Mario take damage.

When he lost all his health, the usual death animation didn’t happen. Mario just got mauled by the piano. He fell as his blood and guts spilled on the floor, and the camera panned to a top down view of his corpse. A distorted version of the merry-go-round music from Big Boo’s Haunt played as the screen slowly transitioned from the in-game shot to a photo-realistic sketch of Mario’s dead body in the same view as the shot. It was very unsettling. I was crying softly as I gazed upon the image. I lost another life.

The photo of my family was shown again. We were even more rotten then before. The view zoomed into the painting, like I was warping again. I was greeted with a shot of Peach’s castle from the outside. The castle was crumbling in ruin. The fields were on fire. The sky was pitch black. Bowser’s laugh played on a loop in the background as children mockingly chanted “You couldn’t save her!”. This went on for a long time, until, a close-up of Peach’s face accompanied by an extremely loud screech interrupted the loop without notice. Peach’s mouth was wide open as if she was screaming, and her eyes were empty, black holes.

Suddenly, I was back in the hallway as Mario was once again ejected out of the painting. Now all of the Toads were gone, and me and my family looked positively repulsive. Maggots were wriggling around in holes in our flesh. Guts were spilling out of our bodies. My dad’s eyeball was hanging loose from its socket. It was too much to bear, but something still urged me to trudge on. I jumped into the painting, with only one life remaining.

This time, there was no name for the mission. Just a blank space where the title would be. I selected the mission, and Mario landed on a very small island in the middle of the ocean. There was a solitary sign. It only read “DIVE”. I did just as it said and entered the water.

The ocean was dark and empty. There were no fish. I wasn’t even able to see anything in the water besides Mario. I swam downwards. I kept going for quite some time, yet Mario never ran out of breath. I counted roughly 10 minutes of swimming until I decided to go back up. Just as I turned Mario around, it came. A huge, and I mean huge Unagi the Eel came out of nowhere and swallowed Mario whole. I was dumbfounded. It went by so fast I wasn’t even sure what I saw. The Game Over screen didn’t show up. All that happened was a fade-out.

The photo of my family and I was shown again. We were plain skeletons now. Once again, it looked very real. I couldn’t move the camera at all. It just stayed focused on the picture. I shut off the game and turned it on again. I chose my file, but it just went to the skeleton photo of my family. I tried this about 3 more times before giving up. I desperately wanted to stop, but some force kept me from walking away. I decided to select the only other saved file. The camera once again focused on the skeleton picture, but this time they were in a different position. As if they were a different family.

About

Squirrel-Monkey is a website that produces video remakes of current video games and social media platforms as if they had been created in the 1980s and 1990s.

History

The Squirrel-Monkey[8] website was registered in February of 2010 as a “hobby project” by actress Kinna McInroe and director Jo Luijten. According the the site’s about page, Luijten was inspired to create 1980s and 1990s version of contemporary games and web apps by the British BBC show Look Around You. On January 21st, 2012, Squirrel Monkey uploaded its first video to YouTube featuring a 1980s pixel art version of the mobile video game Angry Birds (shown below, left). In the first two years, the video gained over 3.01 million views and 530 comments. On January 29th, Squirrel-Monkey published a video featuring a version of the Google search engine running on the 1980s operating system MS DOS (shown below, right), which received more than 530,000 views and 220 comments in the same time frame.

On March 18th, a video parody of a 1990s version of the social networking site Facebook was uploaded to YouTube, which required users to send photographs to Facebook via snail mail to have them uploaded to their profile (shown below, right). Within 14 months, the video garnered upwards of 1.65 million views and 1,300 comments. On April 1st, the channel uploaded a video featuring a 1980s version of the microblogging and social networking site Twitter (shown below right), which gained over 620,000 views and 780 comments in the first 13 months.

About

Genwunner is a negative term for fans of Pokemon who only like the first generation and hate the new generations and/or even pretend they don’t exist. They’ve been known to create criticisms that the Pokemon after Generation I are unoriginal and don’t even look like Pokemon, though some of these remarks have been hypocritical

Reactions

The reason why people and other fans have given negative reaction to these people is because their claims have been known to be hypocritcal and don’t make sense. One of these claims have been that the Pokemon in later generations have bad designs and don’t even look like animals while not even considering the designs of several Generation I Pokemon, or that later generation Pokemon are rehashes when they basically represent different types of animals. DeviantArt user YattaroSB covered this topic in his comic “The Grasshole Show 7”.

Big Yellow Duck

About

“Big Yellow Duck” is a nickname given to a series of giant floating rubber duck sculptures designed by Dutch artist Florentijin Hofman. In June 2013, the phrase was banned by Chinese censors after an image of several giant rubber ducks photoshopped into the famous “Tank Man” photograph began circulating online in remembrance of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.[5]

Origin

On May 2nd, 2013, one of Hofman’s 54-foot high yellow inflatable ducks was launched in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor (shown below, left). On May 15th, the sculpture mysteriously deflated (shown below, right), which resulted in the hashtag “#bigyellowduck” rising to the top searched keyword on the Chinese microblogging and social networking site Weibo.[2]

Sina Weibo user Weiblog[7] subsequently posted a photoshopped version of the 1989 photograph “Tank Man”[3] (shown below, left) from the Tiananmen Square protests, in which the tanks were replaced with the large duck sculptures (shown below, right). Leading up to the anniversary of the protests on June 4th, several words were censored on Sina Weibo, including “1989,” “In today,” “anniversary” and “big yellow duck."

Spread

On June 3rd, 2013, United States Foreign Service Officer Richard Buangan tweeted Weiblog’s Tank Man photo with the description “Chinese netizens 1, Chinese censors 0.”

The same day, the viral content site BuzzFeed[9] published a post titled “Chinese Netizens Defiantly Remember Tiananmen Square,” featuring several images circulating on Chinese social media in remembrance of the Tiananmen Square protest. Among the images featured in the post were a remake of the Tank Man photograph made entirely of LEGO bricks (shown below).

On June 4th, The Huffington Post[8] published an article reporting that Chinese bloggers were using memes to bypass the censorship of tributes to the Tiananmen Square protests, which cited Weiblog’s duck picture and a photograph of a cow standing in front of a line of tractors (shown below, left) as examples. The article also noted that after a vigil candle emoticon used to mourn those who died in the protests was removed from Weibo, users created an emoticon of a Type-64 pistol commonly associated with Chinese military officials (shown below, right).

Throughout the day, several English-language news sites reported on the censorship of Weibo, including The New York Times IHT Rendezous blog,[10] The Daily Mail,[11] Slate,[12] Business Insider[13] and The Wall Street Journal.[14] On June 5th, Redditor Highway2Hell submitted Weiblog’s rubber duck image to the /r/pics[6]subreddit, receiving over 11,800 up votes and 400 comments in the first six hours. In the comments section, Redditor Synthur replied with an edited version of photographer Stuart Franklin’s wider shot of the Tank Man encounter, which replaced the tanks with giant rubber ducks (shown below).

About

Sloth-Facing is a photoshop meme in which the subject’s eyes and eyebrows are horizontally aligned with the nose as to resemble the face of a sloth and the The Goonies character with the same name.

Origin

On May 30th, 2013, Redditor traverhass shared an Imgur album[7] consisting of seven digitally manipulated screenshots from movies in which the actors’ eyes and eyebrows have been vertically lowered to align with their noses. In the title of the post, he called the images “Sloth-Facing.” Within six days, the post gained more than 3,815 upvotes, 1,451 points overall and 143 comments.

Precursor: Tumblr Face Game

In 2011, a photoset collage of Hollywood actor Elijah Wood’s facial features in close-up images (shown below, left) began circulating on Tumblr.[2] On December 24th, 2011, Buzzfeed[1] published a compilation of 26 similar collage-style photo sets depicting various celebrities with their facial features in disproportionate scale. The Elijah Wood photoset resurfaced on Reddit[4] in April 2012, gaining 830 overall points, 10,960 upvotes and 410 comments in the WTF subreddit. On October 28th, 2012, the subreddit /r/Quasimoderp[5] was launched. Two days later, the earliest known instance of such composite image without the white margins was submitted to the subreddit, featuring an image of actor Clint Eastwood[6](shown below, right).

Spread

On May 30th, the sloth-faced images of celebrities and icons were compiled into a Tumblr photoset by Tastefully Offensive,[8] where the post gained more than 10,400 notes within six days. Also on the 30th, the images were featured on Buzzfeed[9], The FW{10] and Obvious Winner.[11] In the following week, sloth-facing also appeared on Funny or Die[12], Laughing Squid[13], Blame It On The Voices[14], Maxim[15] and the Chive.[16]
