About

The Splatoon “Squid Kid” Commercial is a commercial for the 2015 Nintendo game Splatoon which rose to infamy due to its repetition of several lines, notably “You’re a kid now/You’re a squid now” and “Splatatatatatatatatatat”.

Origin

On May 12, 2015, Nintendo of America released an advertisement for the game to their YouTube page. The commercial, which was met with mixed-to-negative reception, was viewed over 850,000 times in less than a month, with over 6,000 likes and 8,000 dislikes.[1]

The commercial’s release was initially covered by several gaming news sites, such as Nintendo News.[2] On May 13, YouTube user Dark Throat uploaded an edited version of the commercial which looped the “You’re a kid/You’re a squid” line. Another version, which looped the line for ten minutes, was also uploaded on the same day by YouTube user Soggy Cereal. On May 15, Tumblr user tastelesssandwiches uploaded an Is This A Pigeon? edit featuring the line, which gained over 11,000 notes.[3]

Also on May 16, SoundCloud user MatrixMarioX released a mash-up of the commercial’s audio with “All Star” by Smash Mouth. On May 18, video game journalism website Destructoid released a short video featuring a man becoming hypnotized after watching the commercial.
