Turntable Ponies refers to a series of exploitable GIF images each featuring a character from the Hasbro animated series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic riding on the spinning disc of a record player.
Origin
On August 28th, 2011, DeviantArt artist Dreatos posted an image[1] titled “Beginning your music career” consisting of the MLP character Vinyl Scratch holding a vinyl record with her mouth. In the description of the image, the artist linked an image consisting of a series of still frames depicting Vinyl Scratch spinning around on a record player (shown below).
On October 25th, 2011, fellow DeviantArt user EROCKERTORRES used the frames that Dreatos had made in order to create a vectored GIF of Vinyl Scratch spinning,[2] in a post titled “Vinyl Spnning [sic] on Vinyl” (shown below).
Spread
Multiple other GIFs of turntable ponies, based off of the original Vinyl Scratch image, have been hosted on Derpibooru and other MLP-related sites. Among the characters used are Twilight Sparkle, Daring Do, and even OCs such as Fausticorn.[3] On January 14th, 2013, a variation of the meme featuring Derpy Hooves spinning the wrong way (shown below, left) was submitted to Derpibooru, with DeviantArt user MammoH being credited for the image.[4] Other variations feature multiple ponies spinning at once (example below, right).
