Punished Snake is the name given to Big Boss during the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain E3 extended reveal trailer. Many image parodies and photoshops have spawned on other video game characters and people who have endured hardships, often adding an eye patch and scars to resemble Big Boss and with a Metal Gear-esque character introduction subtitle.
Origin
On June 10th at E3 2013, Konami had the extended trailer of The Phantom Pain play at the Microsoft panel. Near the end of the trailer, Big Boss is introduced using the name Punished Snake. On June 11th, 2013, the trailer was uploaded to Youtube by the Konami channel (shown below).
Spread
On DeviantArt a search[1] for “Punished Snake” yields over 500 results with parodies and cosplay of Big Boss. On May 19th, 2014, Youtuber Terak JK uploaded a Telltale Walking Dead parody of the MGSV:TPP E3 trailer calling Kenny “Punished Kenny” (shown below).
On 4chan, a search[2] for the name gives over 5,000 results. On 4chan’s /v/ (video games) board, the board-tan“Rage Guy” was depicted as Big Boss and named “Punished /v/” because of the events that took place on the board due to GamerGate.
